The crook was important enough. He just beat up a man and stole his car.

“Why not shoot the crook and leave the dog alone?”

I’d agree, but you know the rules. Heavens we ever shoot a poor, young misunderstood thug. Shooting humans has much bigger consequence than dogs (as it should). In this case, we’d have another whiny pathetic Trayvon Martin soap opera on our hands.

Ironic since these threads actually resemble Trayvon teeth-gnashing rhetoric.

The dog was charging. It doesn’t matter what kind of dog it is when you’re being charged.

BFD. The trigger-happy roid-rage bluedonutboy is a pussy.

I had two large dogs charge me when I was Censusing (and they weren't just happy to see me; they were gigging me for being on THEIR territory), and I didn't need a gun to resolve the situation.

Of course, I just didn't do anything stupid. I guess that would be asking too much from our $40-an-hour civil "servants"...

Oh, please. I’ve been charged by dogs before. Stand REAL still and command them to cool their jets. I speak as a very petite woman.

Yep. And I'm the other end of the spectrum.

“Why are the police so afraid of breeds known for their extremely good dispositions?”

Because even a dog with an “extremely good disposition” can and will bite depending on the circumstance.

Golden Retrievers have a high bite rate mostly due to over breeding leading to poor tempered dogs. Now factor in irresponsible owners who don’t socialize their dogs.

I deal with dogs everyday, and I can tell you that 99% of the dogs I come across are treated more like livestock rather than pets.

Census workers aren’t chasing violent criminals. Your analogy, as with the “mailman, UPS, meter-readers” analogy doesn’t fly here.

The dog got in the way of an important chase. Especially if he really was charging at the policeman, it’s not a big shock he’d be in the crossfire.

Tragic, but not real surprising.

This is NOT the same as a LEO shooting a dog in his fenced backyard while snooping around.

1st off, have you been charged by a dog bent on destruction?

I have, and I'm sure miss marmelstein has.

Look. Dogs are people's property, and this is just the government's way of telling you they own ALL your property. Apparently, making you pay semi-annual rent on "your" house isn't good enough.

If a peasant shot someone else's dog in this manner, they'd have a date with the Just-us System so fast it would make their head swim.

You’re not worth discussing this with.

LOL, are you serious? You know this, how? Perhaps the same way Zimmerman was some skin head nazi with an itchy trigger finger, just waitin to shoot himself a black little boy.

Idiocy on both sides, I should not be surprised.

I was right about Zimmerman from the git-go. I have a nose for news, honed WELL before your time here at FR.

Dog would be alive if the owner had kept his/her dog locked in the yard.

You're a peasant. Try shooting a dog because "it charged you" when you had business near the dog's territory, and see how fast you're up on felony animal cruelty charges.

Bull sh*t.

How is it possible people who enter private property as a matter of *daily* routine, such as mailmen, meter readers, etc, do not need to kill pets on a routine basis or need to carry firearms during the course of their duties?

How is it possible, mail carriers and meter readers are able to protect themselves with mace etc, but law enforcement must shoot the pets to death?

I meant Americans who know nothing about dogs - not necessarily Americans who kill dogs.

In the inner city, thanks to the proliferation of vicious pit bulls, black children are frightened TO DEATH of all dogs. It is pitiable.

Many ordinary children are now brought up to fear dogs by their helicopter parents. I’ve had boys of 12 cringe at the sight of my...Sheltie.

I’m sick of it. We need to raise Americans who know something about canines.

I didn't "name call". I named you correctly as a peasant, unless you're one of them.

Me, I know I'm a peasant, but I'm a disgruntled peasant.

If you're a peasant, and not one of the Blue Standing Army/Street Gang, then you're a HAPPY peasant.

In that case, I'm sure that American Idol or Dancing With The Stars reruns are on. Nothing to see here; move along...

In general, yes, I concede your main points. I’m not that naive to think that ALL dogs of certain breeds are without fault.

However, if you note the rest of my comment, I’m not talking about dogs that are behaving as you described.

I’m talking about Goldens shot down in their homes, Labs in their yards, etc. The police enter into their domains and then proceed to gun them down.

Why? What is so difficult about removing the abject ignorance or fear that prompts officers to shoot family pets?
