So nobody is mistreating this woman, she simply wanted it her way, the whole way, but got herself in a pickle.

One thing that isn't mentioned in this piece but,I'll wager,is a huge factor is the fact that Europeans have *enormous* contempt for the US justice system...courts,police,prosecutors,etc.Europeans (including European courts) almost universally believe that out court system is about as "just" and "civilized" as that in any South American banana republic.
