If I was a religious type, I'd seriously consider the idea that we as a society have turned our backs on God, and something particularly nasty has taken advantage of the opening to come out of the Depths into our midst and is behind a lot of this.

Just saying.

Many years ago I assisted with the investigation of a particularly gruesome murder case. One of the investigators involved, a hardened veteran of his department's homicide division was so affected by it, he told me one day "You don't have to be particularly religious to believe there's something evil out there, and it wants our children." It's been 30 years. I can still hear those words and the tremor in his voice like it was yesterday.
