A Southern California jury has convicted a man of murdering his wife and their 6-year-old daughter after a paternity test revealed the child was not his.

The Riverside County jury found 55-year-old Michael Barbar guilty Friday of two counts of first-degree murder in the November 2009 case.

Prosecutors say Barbar, who had raised the child since birth, smashed her head against a bedpost and strangled his wife eight days after finding out the girl was not his.

Jurors also found true the special circumstance allegation of lying in wait, which makes Barbar eligible for the death penalty.

I thought the ad for some restaurant chain right next to this obscene story was a nice touch by CBS News.

Intentional? But wouldn't this story dampen anyone’s appetite.

“Barbar was then planning to kill his wife’s lover in Texas and flee to Lebanon but was stopped by police in New Mexico, the Press-Enterprise reported.”

He died inside the day he found out the truth.

Some days I think DNA results are just as big a curse as they are a benefit.

JMHO...

If truth is “a problem”, you are asking the wrong question.

So he thought the little girl deserved to die, for something over which she had no control and no knowledge? She died terrified of what her daddy was doing to her.

“Honor” killings? His wonderful Arab reputation shouldn’t have be tarnished in that way. /s

This is so sad. That poor sweet little girl was not responsible for any of this. Children just want to be loved and if you love them they’ll love you back. They don’t know anything about adultery or DNA.

I can understand offing the wife but there was absolutely no call to kill the innocent little girl. That said here in California even if he does get the death penalty he’ll die of old age before he ever sees the inside of an execution chamber. I’m guessing the wife regretted her affaire at the end there, the wife’s lover lucked out as they caught him before he could finish what he set out to do.

So he thought the little girl deserved to die, for something over which she had no control and no knowledge?

I doubt he was thinking at all. He was probably blind with rage.

The mother was responsible to some extent. She lit the fuse the moment she decided to have the affair.

Then again, she was blinded by desire, so was she thinking?

I'd say husband and wife were both responsible for being unable to control their passions.

Yep, the mother was possessed with the demons of lust, lies and betrayal, the father demonically possessed by rage, but the little girl was a blameless angel in this.

Sin begets greater sin and it is always the most innocent who suffer.

From the story:

“Barbar was planning to kill his wife’s lover in Texas and flee to Lebanon but was stopped by police in New Mexico after authorities tracked his cellphone signal, according to evidence at the trial.”

Sounds like the classic honor cleaning and then fleeing to Muzzie-land with the help of the umma.

Barbar strangled his wife, Maysam Barber, with a computer cord as she was handcuffed and naked on the floor. He then went into his daughter Tamara’s room and tried to strangle her as she slept. When Tamara struggled and pleaded for him to stop, Barbar bashed her head at least 20 times into the foot of her bed frame until her skull was crushed and her body was lifeless, according to testimony.

Prosecutors showed pictures of Maysam Barbar lying face down with the cord still wrapped around her neck and photos of Tamara’s bloody bedpost and sheets.

When Barbar married Maysam she had two daughters who were 18 and 10-years-old at the time of the murders.

The 10-year-old step-daughter was awakened by the sound of the pounding coming from across the hall in Tamara’s bedroom.
Evidence in the case showed Barbar found out in February that his wife had had three affairs and discovered photos of his daughter with another man on the man’s Internet profile.

Barbar removed his daughter from school early one day and took her to a McDonald’s where a notary swabbed her cheek for a paternity test. After getting results back on Nov. 6, 2009, he plotted for eight days, prosecutors said, including Internet searches of caskets, researching notorious mass murders and reading Truman Capote’s book “In Cold Blood.” He also emptied his bank account of $30,000, rented a car to be stashed at the Morongo Casino and researched flights to his native country of Lebanon.
The night of the killings, his family had a barbecue. He gave his 18-year-old step-daughter $20 to go out with friends and told her not to come home that night. He also made his 10-year-old step-daughter go to bed early so he and her mother could have what he described as a special evening.

After the murders, Barbar was captured on Morongo Casino surveillance cameras smoking and briefly playing slots. He called his 18-year-old step-daughter and told her to go home because he had killed her mother and sister.

The problem was never that the man knew the truth.
The problem was that he was evil, and his reaction to the truth was to kill the kid.
