I have a question...I have a Mossberg 500 12 ga with 24 & 28 inch barrels. If I were to scope it for deer hunting (or other purposes) what would you all recommend?

One friend of mine said ‘a Red Dot, Low Magnification’. Please confirm, or offer your own ideas. Some of you of course, may say, don’t scope a shotgun...if that is your thought, share it...

I don't have a good deer gun so I have to go by what I've been told.

I assume one of the barrels is rifled? I have a friend who is a long time and very successful deer hunter here in the Midwest and he likes a slightly magnified red dot. Most shots are going to be in the 60 to 75 yard range. With the newer sabot or or rifled slugs you can reach out to almost 200 yards accurately (not sure I;d try a shot that long).

What’s the maximum distance you’d feel comfortable taking a shot? I guess it might depend on the terrain where you’ll be hunting.

I think something like the Leupold VX-1 2-7x33mm would be a good overall Shotgun Scope & could also be used with a muzzleloader.

I say yes for a scope. I have a wide angle 1.5-5 Leupold on my muzzle loader for deer so you can find them through the bushes and on the move. Sounds like you're in an area you can't use rifles so you don't need long range stuff.
