The guys here have set you straight on this. My dad was a Corpsman during WWII in the Pacific Campaign. Pharmacists Mate or something. He wore Marine utilities and I think (he is gone now) Marine dress uniforms with a different rank insignia.
They were very tight with their units, but they did not attend Marine boot camp, but navy training.

Sounds like a Corpsman. They can wear the USMC uni with the Navy devices. They are an honored part of every Marine unit, though, I assure you.
