As she braced for the impact, Amy Cox turned the wheel of her Ford Expedition just enough to avoid a head-on collision, which she says would have killed her and her daughter.
Video of the Waveland woman's harrowing July 8 accident on U.S. 49 has gone viral.
Shot by a Louisiana couple as they were driving north through Collins, the video shows Edward Fairley plowing into Cox's SUV with his Chevrolet HHR.
For 1 minute and 18 seconds, Fairley was seen on the video speeding along in the wrong direction, passing at least 30 cars.
"This is going to be bad," the man in the video says. "He's going to hurt someone severely bad."
Cox was headed back to Waveland from a church camp in Canton with her 8-year-old daughter, Haley, who was asleep in the backseat.
She was hoping to make it home in time to see her 11-year-old son, Nathan, play in the state championships with his Bay St. Louis All-Stars team.
It was about 1 p.m. and as she came over a hill she noticed the car in front of her
veer sharply into the median.

This was in Collins, MS, which is between Hattiesburg and Jackson on Highway 49--a divided highway.
Here is the raw video:

Mississippi GOOD-BAD News PING!
Thank God all survived this.
Old Highway Patrol buddy told me many years ago, when on a divided highway to avoid the left lane like the plague. Damn near every wrong way driver thinks he is on a two lane road and will drive on the right side. That in reality is your left lane. From this video, the old cop was right.

I have been on that stretch of road many times. In some places there are large trees and you are unable to see the other lanes. If you are not familar with that road, you will think that it is two-lane. Particular at night.
Oops, that should have said “large trees in the medium”
So right, Tupelo!
On that hilly Highway 49, you never know what’s over the next rise. I avoid driving 49 whenever I can.
You’re right, Cannon. It’s a scary road with lots of blind spots and crossroads—and big trees in the median blocking your vision!
That drunk driver was on a stretch of pretty clear roadway—he had no tree excuse, the numb skull.
I hear that. On the flats, I can see it coming. On low hill rises, I always feel there's some jackass trying to just make it coming up the other direction, and I'll meet him at the top.
I have been on that road several times. My uncle was in the VA hospital in Collins.
She’s very fortunate. We had a wrong way crash in my area just yesterday that killed the driver who was driving the RIGHT way.
Just terrible!
That’s a good tip.
Yes, the Lord had her in an Expedition, giving her a chance against death.
