It does seem like an odd choice - if they wanted a handgun in .45 ACP, there are much more modern handguns available, ones that are much more reliable, are less labor intensive in terms of maintenance, and that have a higher magazine capacity.
The main reason the military went to the 9MM was ammunition availability. Shoot the enemy and grab their ammo. Same reason we went to the 120 MM smooth bore on the M1A2 and later series tanks.
I loved the 1911. We had to use them on the Combat Pistol Teams when I was shooting for our unit. They had to be "rack" weapons that were not modified. The slides could be tightened and the triggers had to have 6 lb pull or more.
I remember many days we fired over 100 rounds per person. We had an LTC who had an automatic reloader and would provide all the ammo for practice. Ahh, the good old days.

I got slide pinch a couple of times with the DE- don’t think that happens with the 1911 but then you’re probably right about technique, may have been holding on too low and over squeezing on the safety making my hands go numb. Will give it another go. I like the looks of the gun.
Hmmm - flare pistol. Using those newer CG plastic things or an older military type? I guess flare would work but not in my country (western Washington) too many trees and very dense too. When I’m home and hike around I carry a 30-30 Mod. 94. My dad put on a real good stock recoil pad. We have bear that size too plus cougar, coyote, bobcat - all sorts of woodland critters.
I was suggesting a 37 mm steel flare gun, one capable of sending several ounces of flaming metal onto the predator. Google flare gun videos - some are quite interesting.
Even the relatively pipsqueak “Dragon’s Breath 12 gauge videos may illustrate the concept better than my typing.
IMHO, if the fur is afire, the ears charred, the snout, lips and whatever amount of tongue is exposed are suddenly equipped with ‘smoking holes’, and vision suddenly goes bad - well, ‘tis my opinion the bear will change its priorities STAT.
I happen to often carry a 4” .44 mag with 310 grain slugs or a .454 (7.5”) with rather heavier slugs if it is dry and I am concerned with fire.

I have to admit I'm a little disappointed with the lack of gunporn pics on a thread that calls out for it.
I’ll take the good old-fashioned, no-doubt-about-it wheel gun every time.
