If push comes to shove, you can boot your laptop from a knoppix dvd and copy the files to a memory stick.

The Knoppix is a good idea. You can boot from the CD without disturbing the native OS, and you can get at your files to move them somewhere safe while you get this fixed. A very common use of Knoppix, and you don't have to learn a lot of Linux stuff to make it do what you need.

Place you can find all the help you need to recover your files
