Apple Controlled Nearly 70% of Media Tablet Market in Q2

Total available market of media tablets in the second quarter 2012 increased significantly from 18.7 million units in Q1 to nearly 25 million units in Q2. Thanks to the launch of the third-generation iPad, Apple managed to sustain its leadership position with 68.2% market share. Meanwhile, Asustek Computer and Samsung Electronics are closing in and shipments of their tablets are increasing faster than sales of Apple iPad.

Total worldwide tablet shipments for the second quarter of 2012 are estimated at 25 million units; up from 18.7 in the first quarter of 2012, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC). That represents a quarter-over-quarter increase of 33.6% and a robust year-over-year growth rate of 66.2%, up from 15 million units in the second quarter of 2011.

Shipments and sales do not always correlate; it's almost comparing apples to oranges.

Meanwhile, Asustek Computer and Samsung Electronics are closing in and shipments of their tablets are increasing faster than sales of Apple iPad.

Yet, in the article, it states Apple shipped 17 million units in Q1, Samsung 2.3M, and Asus 833 thousand.

So, it might be a bit more revealing if they compared sales to sales, and shipping to shipping.

“closing in” is kind of pushing it. It would be like saying that Mitsubishi and Volvo are closing in on Ford Motor Company.

Asus makes some good stuff. One of my desktops is an older Asus MB with dual Pentium 3’s in it and 3 Gig memory, and it runs like a champ.

Nothing to brag about these days, but hey, in 2000 when it was released, that was pretty high-end.

I also have two more Asus boards floating around somewhere that I occasionally plug in and play around on (in case I need to burn a bios chip),

When I got my Asus 14” laptop less than a year ago, Asus and Toshiba were the top two laptops for reliability.

It has been troublefree, for me.

Got an Asus notebook a couple of years ago.

I have an Asus Eee Netbook that I use as my eBook. Love it.

What I really want is the Asus Transformer. The screen pops off of the keyboard/docking part and becomes a tablet with 6 hours of battery life. Sweet.
