Army cancels XM806 .50 machine gun, will modernize M2HB instead
The Firearm Blog ^ | July 24, 2012

The Army has decided to cut the XM806 Lightweight .50 Caliber Machine Gun program. The XM806 was a scaled down version of the 25mm XM307 Advanced Crew Served Weapon, which was also cut before it went into production.

The XM806 was originally going to be deployed this year, but delays pushed the expected deployment date back to late 2013 or early 2014. Military Times reports that the money allocated to the XM806 will be used to upgrade the Army's .50 M2 Browning machine guns to the M2A1 version. Earlier this year the Army announced plans to upgrade every M2 to the M2A1.

That makes it, what, six supposed replacements that the M2 has managed to outlive?

In a rational nation there would be a statue of John Moses Browning in every town square and his birthday would be a holiday.

Geez, next they’ll probably be reviving the 1911’s.

There was the M85 piece of ookum-dookum they put in the M60/M60A1 vehicle cupolas. Nice idea, pull the black chain to charge the weapon, pull the red chain to fire. Yeah.

Then we went back to good ol spade grips Ma Deuce in an open ring mount. On M48’s no less! Right after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. Lotsa mods on our tanks came out of that one. Strapping an M2 on the main gun isn’t a bad idea either. Instant co-ax!

Looks like the .50 cal has out lived the M1911 in years as a standard weapon.

I'm sorry but that thing in the picture looks ridiculous. Just to look at the M2 Browning .50 caliber is to be looking at a weapon you know is going to bring a world of hurt down on whatever you aim it at.

“Geez, next they’ll probably be reviving the 1911’s.”

The USMC just awarded a multi-year contract to Colt for a whole bunch of modernized M1911’s.

John Moses Browning is the god of guns.

Send that Beretta .380 magnum back to the eyetalians please.

I saw an article where the Marine Corps just ordered a bunch of M1911s, so I will be around for a while.

The B-24 Liberator was famous for mincing japanese fighters. Each bomber had TEN M2 machine guns. A formation of four or more was considered impregnable by the japs. FORTY M2 machine guns — Imagine!

The Marines are already doing that.

Warms my heart, especially since I was born on the 50th anniversary of its official adoption as THE service pistol.

The air war in Europe was won by the b17s and b24s. They shot down more nazi fighters then our fighters did
