Surf music gave birth to punk/skate rock.....lots of bass guitar...

Ah, California.....if only the lunatics weren’t running the place....What a beautiful, beautiful place.

I once tried to write my own lyrics for “Rock the Casbah”...Here goes!

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed...Rot in Gitmo, rot in Gitmo...

Never got past that. LOL! Song writing is incredibly difficult.

The Stones always put on a good show, I’ve never been disappointed.

Yes, I think one could build quite an interesting lyric on this. Something like:

Barack doesn’t like us, **** Obama, **** Obama

“.....(can’t stand her politics, like her music)”

That’s the thing with entertainment. You can’t let politics get in the way, as absurdly hard as it is.

I'm a big "prog-rock" fan, but I'll listen to just about anything, except "rap" and Western, if it's too twangy.

Something I just picked up the other day is "Squackett," "Life Within a Day." It's a collaboration between Chris Squire of Yes, and Steve Hackett, formerly of Genesis. It's quite interesting. You can find some videos on Youtube.

But my absolute favorites are Yes, King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, and Rush.

Rush was really into Ayn Rand, check out the lyrics of “Free Will”.

As a female geetar player (see my profile) I tend to like more acoustic, female related stuff such as Gillian Welch, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss, shawn Colvin, Indigo Girls, etc. Grew up listening to The Kingston Trio (LOVE them), Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Diamond (my mom is a HUGE fan of Neil...been to a number of concerts with her). We were at a Neil concert once, it was all quiet and dark onstage. All of a sudden Neil sings ‘love on the rocks’ and my Mom blurts out ‘is hard on the knees’. Hubby and I BURST out laughing! Couldn’t stop, and the people around us were giving us dirty looks! Too funny.

I play guitar in a surf/garage band, so I love those genres, but I listen to everything from Hank Williams to Black Flag to Caruso to Charlie Parker to avant-garde classical.

Careful about that last one...your captivation may lead to Stockhausen Syndrome.

Well.. since I grew up in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s.. sure, I still like The Beatles, I think Karen Carpenter is one of the finest vocalists of the ‘70’s.. I also like Steely Dan..especially “AJA”, then, of course; there’s Chuck Mangione..wonderfully terrific music.

But, in my opinion, Frank Sinatra is the best..he is absolutely the finest interpreter of the Great American Songbook, excepting Ella, of course..

I’ve also been listening to Classical music for a long time as well..I’m particularily fond of Vanessa Mae, she’s not well known here in America, but she’s a superstar in Europe and Asia. She plays a mean Electric Violin..her music style has been called Techno-Classical..if you’ve never heard of her, you’re in for a treat.. this peice is titled “Bach Street Prelude”..it’s actually a Bach Partitia..but don’t tell nobody..and turn it UP. http://youtu.be/s8f2KYcd6VM

Then..I love Old Hymns..there is a relatively new Christian group, called INDELIBLE GRACE, that takes older hymn texts, sometimes over 200-300 years old, and marries these texts to new music..the result is wonderful..INDELIBLE GRACE recorded a live album a few years ago, titled, “THE HYMN SING”.. here’s one of the tracks from that live album.(the concert was video taped at the Ryman in Nashville) = http://youtu.be/cnjkGH4kk-A

Enjoy the music !

I never grew up either...I like pop-punk, Descendents/All, Bad Religion, Samiam, NoMotiv, Strung Out, Pennywise, Bouncing Souls, NoFX. Most of these bands are über liberal but I like the music and energy.

I actually grew up a metal head with Kiss as my first favorite band, moving on to Van Halen, Bllack Sabbath/Ozzy/Dio, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dokken, Ratt, Metallica, Megadeth...any heavy driving guitar stuff

You gotta love a guy who thought to use a cannon as a musical instrument!

Well, there's also Pachelbel's Canon.

≤}B^)

The Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons led a New Year's Eve concert of the Vienna Philharmonic around a decade ago. At the end of the last Strauss piece, a Galop if memory serves, there was a grace note ending the piece. This was provided not by an instrumentalist, but rather by the conductor, who pulled a pistol from his pocket, pointed it in the air, and fired it--in perfect time.

A fond memory was my experience of hearing the Vienna Symphony in that same hall (The Grosser Salle at the Musikverein) in a concert led by (IIRC!) Yevgeny Svetlanov. It held Rimsky-Korsakov's Antar Symphony and Brahms' First.

While waiting in line, a distinguished looking German-speaking (likely Viennese) gentleman walked up the line offering a ticket. So I paid him some reasonable number of Austrian Schillings and got a seat in the balcony, third row center.

During my brief stay, I was able to pay respects at the statue of Beethoven and the (Johann II) Strauss memorial. Couldn't find Mozart's grave though.

My favorite song is BY THE LIGHT OF THE SILVERY MOON, from 1909, written by NEWYORKCITYGOPMAN’s great uncle.

First time I heard it was on Car 54. Fred Gwyne was singing it.
