Felix Hernandez throws perfect game for Mariners against Tampa Bay
Seattle Post-Intelligencer ^ | 8/15/2012 | Nick Eaton

If there were still any doubts about the prowess of Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, he put them all to rest Wednesday in the biggest way possible.

“King Felix” has become the first pitcher in Mariners history to throw a perfect game.

Twenty-seven batters up, 27 batters down. No walks. No hits. No errors. No base-runners. Nothing.

Perfect.

Hernandez threw 12 strikeouts in his masterpiece on the mound. In just the 23rd perfect game in Major League Baseball history, Hernandez shut down the Tampa Bay Rays in a 1-0 victory at Safeco Field on Wednesday afternoon.

It was the Mariners’ second no-hitter of the season after six pitchers combined for an oh-fer on June 8, and it was the third no-hitter at Safeco Field this year after Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox perfecto’d the Mariners on April 21.

Very exciting stuff. I turned the office TV from CNN to ROOT so we could watch the final three outs.

Of course, the ballpark just let out and the bus routes are going to be a mess... but for a perfect game, that’s okay!

From a karma/superstitious point of view, this loss was Pena's fault.

Don't ask me...

its great for Felix.....

but overall, the Mariners have squandered fantastic talent.....Payrod,Randy Johnson, Griffey Jr,Ichiro, and a host of other players who went on to help win world series for other people....Tino Martinez is one of them...and Freddie Garcia...

somehow, the Seattle management can't get the team to get to the next level....

That's because, as you more or less noted, the Mariners are a farm team :(

We watched it on MLB TV while at work LOL. This from a long suffering M’s fan. Long live the king! On another note, as long as Armstrong and Lincoln are in charge, the M’s will always be losers. Thank God Z held Felix back at the trade deadline.

I was both a long suffering M's and Saints fan. If the Saints can get a Superbowl, I think the M's have a fighting chance of doing well in future postseasons*.

*I hope

Felix’s problem is that he has to throw a perfect game to get a win given the crappy runs support he gets.

My wife texted me from the game during the 7th - loved listening to the rest of it on the radio. Great interviews now. Hernandiz joining the grounds-crew on the mound now as they prepare to grab the bases, pitching rubber and dirt for posterity.

Haha, I would do that too if I were Felix. KIRO or Fox did the radio show, I believe. Great day for me too as the US soccer team won in mexico for the first time, in hostile territory.

I can’t get the M’s out of my system as I grew up watching them with Griffey, Johnson..even A-Rod. Guess I’m just loyal..

I thought the US was going to get crushed.......I think it shows that Klinsi has them going in the right direction.........Tim Howard was huge!

“I thought the US was going to get crushed...”. Believe it or not, the team was just assembled within 2 days and aside from Donovan, they didn’t have their A team. Effing border jumpers thought just because they have a medal in the Olympics, it would be a cake walk for them.

Plus, there are reports that said POS mexicans were shining laser pointers at Tim Howard’s eyes throug out the game so karma on these midgets for being asses as usual.

I still say what the US needs to do is designate an MLS team as essentially the US National team (save for the guys who play in Europe), and have them play together against the other MLS teams, that way they’re used to playing together in the style of the National team. That’s essentially what the Germans do with Bayern Munich.

That’s what Klinsey is doing or trying to do without Gulati’s interference, adding the German approach to the US team. He wouldn’t have signed up if he didn’t have control of the program in the first place.

I wish. My desk is in a dead zone; sketchy internet connection and lots of dropped calls.

I’m not surprised there was another perfecto (more surprising news today is that USA soccer won in Mexico for the first time ever!) or that King Felix threw it (King without a kingdom, Seattle is like a barony when it comes to baseball).

But I am a little surprised that the Rays got tagged AGAIN. They’re been no hit 4 times now since 2009 and 3 were perfect games! Back when they really stunk as the Devil Rays they were only no hit once, in 2002.

Phillip Humber (now in the W Sox bullpen due to suckage) perfectoed Seattle earlier this year, is this the first time a team has been on both sides of a perfecto in the same season?

Yes, this is the first time that a team has been on both sides of a perfect game in the same season.

Remarkable.

Maybe Humber’s decline is unrelated but I think maybe he preferred it when half of Chicago didn’t even know who he was.

I hope he doesn’t disappear like Dallas Braden of Oakland (injured I think).
