Some species of sharks have been essentially unchanged for tens of millions of years. We did not split FROM a chimp line, but from a common ancestor of our line and chimps.

Chimpanzee fossils are extremely rare (perhaps because they were limited to more damp econiches than our ancestors were), and what their ancestors looked like 5 million or so years ago remains a mystery along with how much they changed (evolved).

Understood. But what is the evolutionary explanation for the vast cognitive disparity between the human species and every other species on earth?
