Washburn and his wife were incredulous at how this dog, tucked into a tiny nook between rocks, could have ended up where it was. The whimpering dog was, as Washburn said, "in awful shape." He was convinced it would have died if left without food or water for much longer. The couple tried to coax the dog up out of the rocks and down the mountain but it was clear the dog was too injured and weak to move.
"We knew we weren't going to be able to get her out by herself," said Washburn. "Her paws were completely raw and her elbows were torn up."
Washburn got together a group of eight volunteers and the group headed back up the mountain that Monday morning. The group found the dog with all of its wounds Washburn had tried to bandage reopened. The rocks around the dog were covered in blood, and the dog was back cowering beneath the surrounding rocks.
The group of eight hikers traveled through a full-blown snowstorm that broke out during their hike. Eventually, after a nine-hour rescue mission, the group successfully managed to bring back the broken and bruised dog in a hiker's oversized backpack.

I am a dog lover. I also believe in property rights. This should be a property dispute. No cruelty charge, it was his dog.

Yes, it was his dog and he abandoned it and left it to die, for whatever reason. As far as he is concerned his dog is dead. The people who went back for the dog did what he would not do so with regard to the property issue after 8 days he had abandoned "the property" in question. The dog (property) should go to the ones who found her and saved her. He was stupid beyond belief to place her in that situation in the first place.
Finders-Keepers. Of course the rescuers should keep the ABANDONED dog. Jerk could have gone back for her if he’d cared enough. Rescuers did all the hard work.
Else they should charge him Search and Rescue charges that are appropriate to the amount of work they did, and not release the dog until fully paid.
It’s not like he left his iPod up there. The dog may be property but he willfully abandoned it and made no attempt to get it back when he could.
That sounds like a donation to me. You don’t get that back.
The first time this was posted about the dog, the sheriff was deciding whether or not to charge the owner for cruelty. So, he did according to this report. Good.
I’ll say what I did before. He thought his dog was dead so it is to him. He has a dead dog and the rescurers have a living dog.
My Yorkie is a 4 lb. living dog and I wouldn’t leave her anywhere to die. She depends on me for her safety and I will keep her safe no matter what I have to do.
If you were really a dog lover, you would be outraged at the actions of the owner.
Give him a year or two. I’m sure that, eventually, he’ll find another loving companion he can hurt and betray as just as much.

Please explain why a pet deliberately left to die a cruel, unnecessary death is not a criminal act? If this dog’s owner had chosen to put it out of its misery in a humane way, he would’ve been within his rights, as well as kinder to the animal.
Yes, animals are the property of the owners, but they are not furniture. We owe them food, water, shelter and what care we can afford to give.
Criminal charges are ridiculous. It isn’t like he abandoned the dog in his back yard. If you go out into rough country, you can find yourself in danger of dying. If a storm was moving in, and he didn’t have the equipment to take the dog out...abandon the dog.
Most of those saying otherwise have never been in the position of needing to worry about losing their life.
A real man with love in his heart would have found a way to get his injured dog down that mountain.
Thank goodness for the Angels who came across him and saved his life!

Let me see if I’ve got this right...you think the original owner should have bashed the dog’s head in with a rock. Correct?
Me? I would have to know any dog I owned was actually dead.
Even if I thought they were, I would at least attempt a recovery for a decent burial.
I'm just saying criminal charges are excessive.
