Word For The Day, Wednesday, August 22, 2012-- penultimate

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

penultimate (pi-nuhl-tuh-mit)

hear it pronounced

adjective 1. next to the last: the penultimate scene of the play. 2. of or pertaining to a penult. (okay, gang, what the hell is a “penult?”)
penult (pee-nuhlt, pi-nuhlt) noun, the next to the last syllable in a word

Etymology: Origin:

1530–40; < Latin paenultima ( syllaba ), contraction of paene ultima almost the last; see pen-, ultima

What penultimate doesn’t mean:

"final," "last," "best," or "best of the best."

It means, very simply, "next to the last."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification.
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Thanks. In the interest of maintaining decorum in my own classroom, I’m ignoring the fact that you used “hard” and “enlivened the staff” in the same post.

It’s time for someone in MO to start a write in campaign, it can not be for Brunner or Steelman though as sore loser laws apply.

I predict:
Impoverished Widow Bass Playing FReepin’ Biker-—58%
McMoron (Dem)———————————————42%
Akin (Rep) —————————————————10%

(This adds up to 110% due to “voting irregularities” in St. Louis)

Tough choice: Talent or no-Talent. Or McStupid.

It does Palin no credit that she mentioned Steelman while unaware of the MO sore loser laws. That’s the kind of thing that bothers me about her. It’s fine that she’s all about the BIG PICTURE, but a serious candidate has to be about the details as well, and she has shown a propensity to be unconcerned with them.

I would have preferred a female but Jim would work too.

As to Palin and the details, hey, she's not a candidate for anything ,she is the first person that I know of to throw out the third party/write in option...

no, she isn’t a candidate and this proclivity of her’s is a reason why she shouldn’t be and likely won’t be.

took me the longest time to figure out what the deal was with the PussyRiot stuff. Kept getthing #pussyriot tweets in my timeline from serious legit commentators and kept thinking, wait, it can't be THAT can it? i mean Archbishop Cranmer was commenting on it!

He’s a Florida resident.

I believe David Limbaugh is from/in Missouri.

The name can be a bit off-putting to some. I saw an article which described the band (post-punk or something, whatever that means) and never gave the name. I did tweet that I was surprised that Pussy Riot got 2 years, because we had one in college and only got 30 days.

I meant it was his original home. Nothing says that you have to live in a state any earlier than election day.

I’m sure Rush doesn’t need the aggravation or pay cut, but it would make peoples’ heads explode.

Romney is the penultimate candidate I want in the White house, Obozo is the absolute last person I want to see occupy it.

Sorry for not posting often been busy, but have been reading them.
