“Anyone who did this to an animal would have no problem with doing the same to a human.”

I have to say, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard today. Five’ll get you ten that this was just a kid’s stunt gone wrong, and not some potential serial kiler.

I am not sure why they sent that many but we usually respond with 5 + any students riding out with us.

We send the Engine company to help lift patients. Weight and poor health go hand in hand. If it is a bad trauma or CPR, or something that may well go bad quickly, there may be 3 or 4 plus the patient in the back of the ambulance.

If you pick up enough 300+ lb patients it takes a toll on your back. I am reminded of that constantly.

And for this one out of 50 that DID survive, there’s a recthole who thinks it’s funny or clever to torture it.

Third, the Fire Department actually showed up!

There are half as many fires and twice as many fire fighters as 30 years ago, on average. (Yes the public unions have been very successful).

It's not like they're overwhelmed with work.

I'm in the health care biz....I've seen patients brought to the hospital on a pallet...in the back of a truck.

Then weighed out back of the hospital at the loading dock. Because the patient couldn't be handled through normal channels..and couldn't be weighed in the hospital proper.

That said...first responders can't know what they are going up against. I've had 500 lb. people on the floor bleeding...You know how many people it takes to lift that person back to a bed?

I've had plenty of patients 500 to 900 lbs..in the hospital. Sometimes we get overhead hoists to move them.

It ain't pretty...........

NautiNurse, ever been to Turtle Kraals in Key West? Vintage pictures on the walls of 700 lb green turtles, in traps, fished to extinction for soup. Kinda sad.

Where have you been? Animal cruelty by children is a HUGE red flag for future abuse. Of humans.

Agreed. Looks like the PETA people are out in full force today. It was a TURTLE!

“Where have you been? Animal cruelty by children is a HUGE red flag for future abuse. Of humans.”

Well, that is only partially true. Zoosadism is part of the Macdonald triad, which was proposed many years ago as a set of behavioral characterics which were more common in sociopaths than the general population. However, it isn’t a generally accepted standard for any kind of preventative diagnosis, because the link is tenuous and many studies contradict it.

Now, a few important things to note are:

1) Animal cruelty alone wasn’t even proposed as being particularly meaningful, it was a specific combination of behaviors which included animal cruelty.

2) It was only proposed that this particular combination was more common in people who later were diagnosed as sociopaths, than in the general population. This means that there were plenty of people in the general population who exhibited zoosadism, and even the entire triad, who never turned out to be sociopaths.

Now, anecdotally, I can attest that this kind of behavior is extremely common in children, especially in young boys of a certain age. Of children I knew growing up, the majority of boys engaged in some form of this behavior, easily outnumbering those who did not. If my sampling is at all representative of the general population, then there are millions and millions of people who did similar things who didn’t grow up to abuse humans. A “red flag” that fails to predict behavior, and in fact statisically predicts the opposite, is really just a red herring.

Right. I’m sure none of the good little boys ever fried ants with a magnifying glass or pulled the wings off of butterflies in your neighborhood. They never cut up worms to see if it was true that both parts would stay alive, or caught fireflies in a jar with no air holes to see how long they could live. Never, ever, would they shoot at squirrels or rabbits with a BB gun, just for fun, or try and get the cat and dog to fight each other, or put a spider and a grasshopper in a cage match to see who would win. Nope, not in your perfect little sanctuary of human decency and kindness to all God’s creatures!

On a semi-related note, and speaking from experience, a turtle that experiences free-fall will vomit.

well, it's still a lifeform. The woman or her neighbors should have helped. Perhaps it was too high for her? We don't know. Yes, the Fire Department does help for cases like this and I support it.

Investigating it further on low resources makes some sense -- kids who torture animals (and I'm not saying that this was the case, it may be just curious kids who thought their turtle would enjoy it, or even who didn't know better) can lead to bad adults.

MrEdd, with due respect, you're jumping to a conclusion. Killing a chicken humanely for food is completely different from this prank using an animal. I'll assume the kids were dumb and didn't think, but they should learn a lesson that animals are not toys and one can't willingly harm them in play (I'd give my kids a spanking and let them mull on what they did).

Also, even if one kills a chicken inhumanely (say one is desperate for food), that's different from putting it up on a balloon -- when the balloons pop, the turtle crashes to the ground.

Yes and no — most likely it is what you said, some kid’s stunt gone wrong, with just a spanking to teach them not to do it again. But if a kid does such things repeatedly it does indicate psychological problems. GRanted, that’s probably highly unlikely in this case...

I would hesitate about mental evaluation. I think a parent, teacher, minister, rabbi or priest would be far better equipped to respond than a shrink could ever dream of being.

They are shrinks in the real sense dealing with real people from real life. I never intended to imply it had to be a secular or government schlub.
