Word For The Day, Thursday, September 5, 2012 - cacology
dictionaries ad nauseam | 5 September 2012 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 09/06/2012 3:18:43 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cacology \ka-KOL-uh-jee\, noun
Defectively produced speech; socially unacceptable diction.

Example sentences:
As to prose, I don't know Addison's from Johnson's; but I will try to mend my cacology.
-- Lord Byron, The Works and Letters of Lord Byron

Such cacology drives some people to distraction.
-- Linton Weeks, "R Grammar Gaffes Ruining the Language? Maybe Not", NPR

Etymology:
Cacology comes from the root caco- meaning "bad." This prefix occurs in loanwords from Greek. Similarly the suffix -logy is a combining form used in the names of sciences and bodies of knowledge.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

People in SA should have learned from Henry Cisneros not to vote in a Che Guevarra for mayor, but apparently they haven’t-a good reason not to live there. The current mayor is an American by birth only, and is certainly no Texan, in my opinion-he and his bitter mommie would be more at home in LA-not SA...

Most of us respect the Alamo as the symbol of Texas liberty, regardless of ethnicity-most of us whose families came to Texas via Mexico from Spain before 1820 or so also have hispanic ancestors who fought in the battle for Texas independence-on the Texans’ side...

She and her husband were rare breeds, all right. Everyone I know worked the summers and even during the school year when they were in college. Not those two.

I already told our son who just started college this year at "Auburn"! - go tigers!, that he will be working every summer co-op or not.....

His future begins the very first day of College so he might as well get used to the realities of work and little time off now.....

That way he'll appreciate what money he earns now, how much the government confiscates, and vote accordingly.... to the right!

At first glance, I thought she looked pretty ragged since the last oh-please-look-at-me video series of ozero worship. But she used a model last time.

The hysteria ends tonight, thank God-that convention borders on a 60’s anti-war protest-flag burning and howls of “police brutality” are the only things that are missing...

Because they are in the South
The cacology of the politicians
Is designed to make the masses
Forget their glaring omissions

Such obvious cheap theatrics
At the ‘rat party convention
Should show every common man
Their level of condescencion

They hope no one remembers that
They were busy spreading hate-
And overlooked God and Israel
Till it was a bit too late...

Did anyone see what Sandra whats-her-name had to say? I watched H2, and only tuned in to hear part of Clinton’s speech just for the hell of it.

Let us marvel at the cacology of the cacophony generated by the DNC. (Apologies, overslept and only on second cup of java.)

She spoke the usual drivel about how Romney will take everything away from women. RME The tart got a hefty amount of applause for just walking out. Sickening.

I hope Planned Parenthood hands out free condoms to any woman stupid enough to believe anything that comes out of that circus-a mom with no sense of personal responsibility is not something any kid needs...

Looks like we wrote Aiken off a bit too early.. The executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said here that "I think that his obituary was written prematurely."

considering Rove wanted to murder him in cold blood, the obit wasn’t all THAT premature... ; )

xsteen’s BF was at the USOpen up in NY this past weekend and apparently the WH was given credit for bringing the troops there, though it was ANOTHER organization that did that actually. He said that they [WH] had listed it as marine CORP, not CORPS. Obams TOTALLY confused now that he screwed up with the CORPSMAN the last time!

But as we heard last night, CORP doesn’t even mean people so what kind of cacology are they espousing?
