"When I worked in Japan, companies were allowed to advertise the gender, age range and sometimes even nationality they were seeking along with the qualifications."

When I was in Korea, it was customary for resumes to include a photo of the applicant. Those without would not even be considered.

Shooting them may be a little overboard. Just fire every one of the bas****s en masse and let them apply for new jobs. A chimpanzee at a desk sorting resumes into yes and no stacks would do at least as good a job as most of them.

Lots of dishonest people hold fake interviews with companies who are hiring just so they can show they went through the process to keep their government check coming.

i've had a number of people admit this when "applying" at the bar i work for. they don't even want an interview, but have to fill out a certain number of applications a month to keep their cash assistance.

The only thing HR personnel are good for are handing out corporate benefits and health insurance packets. Even in that regard they could be replaced by a monkey handing out something from the red box, blue box and yellow box to get a piece of fruit.

HR actually has people? i tried to call my HR office, got an automated system. first thing it said was to check the website. i tried multiple numbers, emails, and only got to one real person- rather, her voicemail- and never heard back.

The photo request was common in Japan as well. If you sought work though an agency, the photo was a requirement. Most companies also required them, but a few didn't as it was considered a rather archaic requirement by some who wanted a modern image.

Another weird and archaic thing is that many of them wanted your resume handwritten, particularly in Japanese. It gave them not only an idea of your skill level in their national language, but also (supposedly) your personality.

When I lived in Japan (1988-2002) and traveled to Korea on business, I'd say Korea was probably ten years behind Japan socially at first, but less than half that when I left.

Very funny thing about the Oriental mind. Many think they can see into your personality by looking at your photo. But it is the height of rudeness to make fixed eye contact. The Japanese even have a saying about the eyes being the window of the soul. But you learn quickly NOT to look people in the eye.

I spent some time on temporary assignment in Korea and my co-workers there tried to convince me to stay by saying I could become fluent in Korean within a few months because it was so similar to Japanese. There is more similarities between the two societies than either side cares to admit. And not just the languages and unwritten rules about eye contact.

No! I stand by my statement. Shoot them. Firing them will just put them back in the workforce. They're essentially useless pieces of detritus.

What's even worse is when you have to go through the company's website. I can only imagine how many applications and resumes they get, and usually there's no hiring manager to speak to.

applying through websites? those have so many filters it isn't even funny. the vast majority of applications don't even clear the software filtering.

I spent three years in Korea from '95 - '98 and concur. At that time folks my age (Gen X) and older, tended to be very anti-nork, and had no love for Japan. Those right behind us seemed to be embracing a lot of Japanese culture, music and tech. The tamagotchi was released about that time frame and you couldn't spit without hitting somebody with one. When I left the US in '95 cell phones were still something of a luxury and status symbol; when I landed in the ROK, every teenagere had one.

The real job of HR is to make sure the company doesn’t get sued. If there’s trouble with an employee, they gather the paperwork to later assure you have no case WHEN they fire you for something.

If they fire you right away, in this day and age they can get sued, so HR is stuffed full of minorities and dolts (or minority dolts) whose job is to “get stuff on ya”.

Could be sending email....some trumped up charge of sexual harassment —whatever.

HR people have rich knowledge in one area only —TREACHERY. No technical skills —just basic law and how to set people up.

Neeever think HR people are there to help people get along.

These companies waste your time when they really had no intention of hiring you. I don’t know what criteria they are looking for when they hire.

I went to a place that had an ad in the local newspaper> The guy there said he wasn't really looking for anybody, he just wanted his people to see the ad and tighten up fearing that somebody was going to get the ax.

They won't hire you if you don't have a job.

They subscribe to these psych-test computerized systems.

You never see a person.

You are never guaranteed a review or any contact, even a statement you weren't hired.

They do illegal discriminated based on age.

Retail wants young workers, tech wants young workers, both where young is under 35, maybe even under 30.

They do engage in diversity hires.

Of course there are freepers here who will blame this homeless man for his having been homeless, call him feeble, lazy, corrupt, etc. I know, I've seen these comments in other topics. You see them in topics on benefits, unemployment, etc. I tell them each time to put up or shut up: Hire!

Sad but true, the easiest time to find a job is when you already have a job.

There’s a lot of that. Fake ads. Fake interviews just to collect resumes and employment data. The dehumanized application process... it’s amazing to me there hasn’t been a workers revolt in the Obama economy.

Yep. It's a bot that screens out most applications.

One of the tricks to get around it is to use key words from the online ad both in your resume and any application that allows you to describe yourself.

Don't do this! Copy and paste The key elements of the online ad in a white (invisible) font. The bots can now pick up on this.
