Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, located in North Grafton, MA announced September 6, 2012 that they are opening the nations first obesity clinic for pets. The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine boasts three board certified nutritionists to teach pet nutrition to up and coming veterinarians. Deborah E. Linder, DVM, DACVN, a graduate of the school and resident in clinical nutrition will head the program.

Dr. Linder stated the following about the clinic; “By employing sound, research-proven methods, Tufts' Veterinary Obesity Clinic will help owners achieve safe and effective weight loss for their pets," said Dr. Linder. "While the common perception leans toward overweight pets being happy, research has proven otherwise, and we hope to effect change in the obesity epidemic among companion animals."

It is estimated that between 60 and 70 percent of companion animals are overweight. While many think that their pet is cute when pudgy, it can seriously alter the quality of life for the beloved pet.

Most commercial dog food is absolute garbage, made mostly of grain. Look at the label. It’s awful stuff. Dogs were meant to eat actual meat—all parts—with some green vegetables from time to time. They’ll stay healthy, they won’t shed much, they’ll have better breath and better teeth, and they also won’t poop as much.

Dogs need exercise, and not just once-around-the-block-’til-he-poops, either. At least a few miles. Even for tiny dogs! I’ve had Chihuahuas and other little critters, and they’re perfectly happy with a couple of miles twice a day. They sleep well and don’t get unhappy and/or destructive.

It’s rare you’re going to have a really fat dog and a slender, fit owner. They’re connected.

Shadow sleeps on Hubby’s chest until he falls asleep, and then she comes to sleep right up against me.

Lucas Prince of Darkness is having trouble getting over my Rocket’s passing. We’ve got the kid gloves on for him, and he’ll be all right again, please G-d.

Miss Hissy Slashy has taken over the media room, and she’s quite comfortable up there.

When people leave their pets locked in a tiny NYC apartment for 12 hours a day, of course they’re going to get fat.

You mean 24 hours a day. CAts need exercise just like dogs do. They need cat trees or stairs...etc. The cats live short lives in conditions like that...it's almost torture....how would people like to live in a box their whole life?

Vegetarian cats? I don’t think so. Cats require meat proteins and can go blind on an exclusively vegetarian diet.
