Possibly from oil bubbling up -- no, seriously, at least in the area of the tar pits in downtown, particularly when the weather's warm (and it's been hot lately), the oil just below the surface bubbles up and smells like sulphur. Same with the wells in the Signal Hill and Brea areas.
I don't know how many wells there are out in the valley, but if you're anywhere around one, you'll know for sure because of the smell.

There was a large storm in the desert last night which is causing the sulfur odor to be released from the Salton Sea. It is becoming quite strong in the Coachella Valley today. I think the Salton Sea theory is probably spot on.

Didn’t know that the Obamadork was visiting LA.

Noticed this smell last night when coming down from spending the weekend up in the mountains, it was commented on by co-workers today. I didn’t notice the smell last night in Duarte, but do today.

The 2 o’clock news report led with this “smell” story.
Many people were interviewed, all of them said the odor was like rotten eggs.
The ‘officials’ they interviewed said they didn’t know what it was or were is was coming from.
It is interesting how wide spread the reports are.

The LA Times, the authority of record in covering things that stink, states that authorities are saying that high winds have forced the smell of the annual fish die off in the Salton Sea to come to the urban areas. This makes some sense - I was watching the powerful inland storms overnight, and they were racing westward, driving with them some strong winds.

I love bill Carroll’s explanation on KFI. mayor Antonio is back in town, and he sure let out a stinky one on stage in Charlotte. As Bill put it, “You know how you go,outside to let a stinky one out, and sometimes it follows you back in?”.
