That evening, the whole family was going to get together for dinner to watch President Bush's address to the nation, so my dad and I went over to Walmart to get food. As we were walking across the parking lot, I happened to glance up and spotted a large aircraft flying high overhead. Since we are somewhat between Omaha and Washington DC, I've always wondered if that could have been Air Force One.
BTW, does anyone else remember the initial reports of car bombs going off in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington? These reports came in about the same time that the second tower came down, so they were light on details and nobody had any idea if the reports were real or not.
Thank you, Stonewall.
I recall the days and evenings afterwards of clear blue skies (Seattle area) with no airplanes.
Except one - a prop. plane that was high in the sky patrolling a north-south route as it passed over my house every hour or so. Would go out at night and listen to it drone overhead, and think about all that had happened.
Then one day, we were at the elementary back to school picnic on the school’s lawn with everyone else. The sound of a jet broke the silence and everyone stopped talking. A little girl exclaimed “Look - a plane!!” Not in fear, just that it was an event.
But with others you could see a bit of fear. I always found it sad that the terrorists had such an effect on us, that the mere presence of a plane in the sky would bring such attention.
But - we are over that now. (Of course still have the TSA, etc.)
