What Rifle Is This? (Garand?)
CNN | unknown | Halemo

Posted on 09/23/2012 2:38:05 AM PDT by Yehuda

I just posted this photo

over here, and I suddenly realized I wasn't sure what rifle this "gentleman" is holding.

Is this a Garand?

could be, but wood is too new

unless it is one of those that Obama wouldn’t let us buy so he could sell them to Muslims overseas...

Sure looks like it to me although the sight looks funny and you can see the gas plug clearly. The stock is a Korean War Era Garand stock (slightly bigger in relief than the WWII stock - you can see how it protrudes a bit higher than the band). I’d say it is a Garand, probably been rebuilt and parts from elsewhere added.

I’m thinking now it might be a Garand license build from another country....front gas cylinder all wrong, funny sight, no stacking swivel.....rear sight isn’t too clear...

You might think so but his left palm is where the magazine would be...

Not sure myself, his hand could be just forward of the clip, the shape of the actuator rod is what I am keying on.

The rifle started out as a Garand but it has been Photoshopped to place it into the hands of the shooter and make it fit into the frame of the picture. To do this, the graphic artist had to do some trimming of the image and in the process lopped off the sling and stacking swivels, bayonet lug, and the end of the gas plug. The repositioned front sight on the shortened barrel is also slightly cocked to one side.

It's a Garand. The bayonet lug and the stacking swivel are missing - either from photoshop editing or we have an Arab customizer at work.

Trust me in this one: I was issued a Garand by the Marine Corps in 1965 for ITR and Staging Battalion, I have owned about 8 of them over time and I even had some VC try to kill me point-blank with one (he missed all eight shots).

it's an M-1 Garand.

I knew it was some sort of Garand, but there is a lot wrong with it...certainly not an issue condition. I’ve rebuilt 4 of them.

I’m going with the BM-59, which is of course a Garand modified by the Italians to 7.62x51 and a removable magazine.
However, it could just be backyard Mo rear sight job on a normal Garand.

Back when Saddam Hussen’s Iraq attacked Iran, the news showed reports of the Republican Guard, some with M1 Garands, ready to repel the Iraqis.

I agree is short looking as a tanker model but I discounted because of the bayonet mount and stacking swivel don’t eem to be there.

Yes, it looks like a movie stage prop. The wood is completely wrong, which is probably why they used duct tape to keep the handguard on. There's something not quite above the operating rod handle, and everything forward of the handguard looks like it was faked.

I just couldn't enlarge the image enough to do more than offer a rough guess.

This is an M1 Garand. It looks somewhat funky because: (1) CNN did a lousy job on composing the graphic composite or (2) some outfit shortened the barrel to make a 43-inch, 9.5-lb. rifle more like a carbine. It's hard to tell from the photo.

"Did you get him?"

The story's funnier than you think: It was a horribly hot day and I had found a well, so everybody had stuck me with an armload of canteens to fill. I left my rifle and helmet and flak vest with those guys and walked across a trail to the well. I sensed a guy wearing all white to my left down the trail and he opened fire from about 15 yards. I dumped the canteens and dove headfirst into the vegetation along the trail while he kept firing at me. He ran out of ammo (with that well-known "ping" of the clip being ejected) and my fellow grunts tackled the guy and took him prisoner. We interrogated him for a while and he was a 17 year old one week member of the Vietcong after being drafted from a nearby village. He had no idea how to use the M-1 - he was given the thing loaded and told to go out and kill Americans. The rifle was all rusty and the sights were rusted all the way down. Our company commander had us take him back home to his parents and released him to them but we kept the rifle. We told them to keep him home and hide him if the VC came back again. Our other choice would have been to turn him over to the ARVN where he would have been locked up with the really bad actor VC and we would have had a more effective VC later. We had great relations with those villagers and they routinely helped us/showed us where the mines were.

Everybody was lucky that day.

Not a BM59. they were based on the Garand design but utilized a detachable box magazine, and had a straight operating rod causing the gas piston to be separated lower from the barrel. My guess is this is an “airsoft” copy of the Garand rifle.
Muzzie terrorists don’t wear watch caps either.

CNN fabrication all.
