I've heard that quote before, but can't find where he said it. Is their film? Did he say it in a book?
I'm in a death match with a neighbor and he wants me to back it up.

Link: The quote comes from page 261 of the paperback edition of The Audacity of Hope.I went to the linked page, onyx, and read the comments below the editorial. I read quite a few comments that essentially call the author a liar. One of the commenters typed in the exact quote as follows:
"Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."
I haven't read or even looked at the actual book (ick!), so I don't know whether or not this is a true representation of the words. However, I don't think paraphrasing it is a good idea even if it could be interpreted as his having said muslims. We don't like our side being misquoted and when we do it, it can backfire.

I googled the words. That was only one link. There are others. I have not read any of his books.

Thank you so much! I've been quoting it for 3 years because I had heard it, but when someone challenged me, it got tough.
People just won't believe you unless you stick it in their face. My neighbor is one of those, and frankly, even then she won't believe it. I've even put it to her that she can be a Democrat or a Christian, but she can't be both, and she actually hesitated for a couple of minutes, before saying there were plenty of Christians that were Democrats. We had just discussed abortion and sodomy in the Dem platform. I said the most popular politician from the Dem party committed adultery and then lied about it bringing on an impeachment. She said he still a good man. I said you and Hillary have the same disease.
