In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

sententious \sen-TEN-shuhs\, adjective
1. Abounding in pithy aphorisms or maxims: a sententious book.
2. Given to excessive moralizing; self-righteous.
3. Given to or using pithy sayings or maxims: a sententious poet.
4. Of the nature of a maxim; pithy.

Example sentences:
For he was a poet and drowned untimely, and his verse, mild as it is and formal and sententious, sends forth still a frail fluty sound like that of a piano organ played in some back street resignedly by an old Italian organ-grinder in a corduroy jacket.
-- Virginia Woolf, "Street Haunting: A London Adventure," Collected Essays

It was inconceivable that she was using the boring, sententious, contentious Shepherd for anything but a hollow threat to him, but this semblance of wrongdoing could now be turned to advantage.
-- Kurt Vonnegut, Player Piano

Etymology:
Sententious is related to sententia, the Latin root for the word sentence. The Latin word sententiosus meant "full of meaning, pithy."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I think their purposes are to discourage Republican voters and sway independents who want to vote for a winner.

Cloids moved in and it is sprinkling off and on with rain likely most of the weekend-yippee!

Maybe in the upcoming debates
Obama will be channeling Gore-
All wild-eyed and sententious
On the environment and more

Will he talk about all the jobs
He thinks he saved or created?
But that is just so shot down
As misery continues unabated

Or maybe he’ll channel Carter
Who said Iran was nice back then-
Which might prompt Romney to reply
See-there you go again...

Just was surveyed. Today I was a 30 yo Hispanic Catholic single woman, identifying as independent, voted for obams in 08 and DEF voting for Romney this time. They asked how often I went to church. No union questions.

More likely has to do with living in a swing state. Like TN, TX is reliably red and NY and NJ reliably blue, so what individual voters think is of no moment. VA, OH, FL, WI, CO, NV are prob being surveyed.

I WISH they would call me, but I live in a state that is going for ‘bams no matter what. What do they care.

You are probably right-and I do my best to keep my little corner of Texas red.

I saw a blonde guy with dreadlocks (yes, dreadlocks) getting out of a Prius with an Obama bumper sticker today at the general store, and made sure I was at the checkout when he was. Turned out he was a birkenstock wearing townie meeting a friend at the marina to go fishing-bought ice, snacks, asked for directions to the marina and departed. I was all set to scold a local for treason...

I saw one just like that on the road today and commented that one of my friends was getting a car just like that!

LMAO! Well, not quite, but the cashier/store owner did tell him now don’t you turn on any roads but the one with the marina sign on the corner, or you’ll wind up gettin’ lost, which made me laugh when he drove away.
