and some cans of survival garden seeds

No. If you're relying on stored seeds you're going to be dead before they do you any good. Gardening has a learning curve. Does the person have any idea how to garden? Does the person have the tools? Does the person have a prepared planting area? Does the person have access to enough water for the garden? Does the person know when and how to plant and care for the plants? What about bugs and diseases? Then there's the weather that can throw some real zingers at your garden. Some of those "survival" seeds may not produce in your growing zone. Some may require much more space than you have. Can the family survive three or four months until harvest? Does the person know how much is needed to feed his family? They say if you haven't prepped by now you're too late. Well, you can still buy a bag of rice today but if you haven't had a garden going for the past 2-3 years, you've missed the boat completely.

We already have an established organic garden, with composted raised beds; a well and a watering system set up. - Even then (and we ARE experienced with years of experience in organic gardening and pest control), we aren’t silly enough to totally depend on what comes out of the garden. We have stored quite a decent supply of food in the bunker, etc. - Still, a vacuum sealed jar of seeds (or two or three) in addition to storage items, is wise. If things go south, everyone will have time to get back to the land real fast. Nothing like a growling gut to motivate one to figure it out eventually. (Oh, and sprouting seeds in a sprouting jar to put on salads or just eat by themselves is a good thing. Broccoli sprouts and others are good.

Now, Now, bgill don't be so negative.LOL. It's never too late to learn to garden and better to start today and start practicing.

My granny lived on a farm and almost never went to the store all during my childhood. We had fresh milk, made our own butter and bread, and grew all our fruits and veggies. In addition we had a pig slaughtered, smoked, and made our own bacon.

Sure you want to have a sizable stash to last 6 months to a year, but eventually you will run out of that food. Then what? If it is a true Apocalypse, a little gardening skill is bound to come in handy.

Join the FR Weekly Garden Thread. If nothing else, you can learn a lot just by lurking. LOL.
