Keys getting blurry here. I’m so sorry for your loss. 24 years old—wow. Please try to take comfort in the fact that, thanks to you,, Kydie’s long life was full of comfort and love.

My wife and I have five kitties, all rescued from the shelter. One of them is a diabetic. Hope that’s not what is wrong with your Whitey.

Well, we took Whitey to the vets and he seems to think that she might either be diabetic or have some kidney problems, both where we will have to deal with it. They will keep her until Saturday to make sure what is going on and to stabilize her more. BTW, I'm doing more research to help her out based on what I've read here and I will get to your private mails soon. Right now, I'm waiting for a status check from the vets. I'm not too depressed now, at least she is under expert care and the kidneys do concern me but with this vet, we did keep one cat alive (where another vet wrote her off) with kidney failure for 2 and a half years with only diet modifications and another for 9 months with fluids. I'm hoping that we can keep her going as long as the first if not longer.

He just wants to make sure because diabetes can play havoc with the kidney numbers too.

I hope your kitty will be OK.
A cat who takes a swipe at The Empty Chair, is a great cat of high intelligence.

Get better soon, Kitty!

Saw your post last night and wondered how the kitty was doing. Sounds like you’re doing better and Whitey is in good hands. Good to hear!

Kydie was 24 years old???!!!! Wow. That’s incredible. It sounds like she was a very loved pet.

My Chloe is 17 and I understand where you are coming from. She is irreplaceable. I can only hope I’ll have Chloe as long as your Kydie.

I am sorry for your loss.

Sometimes I thought Kydie was gonna outlive me. She was a fighter and I think she loved every single day of her life. She was a semi-feral cat and she wouldn't even let most people even get a look at her. If someone knocked at the door she would hide from them until she was sure they left. She was my sons cat and when my son moved out he realized that she was so attached to me he didn't have the heart to separate us. Lucky for me. Cats choose and she obviously chose me. Kydie loved us both but she would ALWAYS start waiting for me in the window about an hour before I got home from work, sitting up and patiently staring out the window waiting for my truck to hit the driveway, then she would hurry to the front door waiting for me to open it and we'd go through our daily ritual.
Cat lovers know exactly what I mean.

It's been almost a year come January and I still think about her and miss her every day. I hope your Chloe will live for many, many more healthy years. Thanks for your kind reply.

Sorry for your loss, it does hurt, but it is really cool to have a cat go past 20. My oldest, Pansy, lived to be 19 years and 8 days. If she did not get lymphoma, she'd be 25 today and I think there would be a fair chance she'd still be here although she was on meds for thyroid.

BTW, no news from the vet yet, no news is good news they say, we will have to see tomorrow.

We did have one cat, Muffin, a Burmese, she had high kidney values when she was 14 years old and one vet said that she was going to die. We took her to the vet we have now and we kept her going very well for 2 and a half years of kidney food and Fancy Feast with the kidney failure.

Thx for the update — hope it continues to go “positive” for Whitey.

These cats, they just get under our skin, don’t they? Silly furmutts! :-)

Prayers that there is nothing “seriously” wrong, that whatever it is can be treated with medication.

God loves his animals, and wants them to be with us as long as possible.

I know everything is going to be just fine.

Interesting.....Kydie and CHloe could be twins. Her mama was feral and had four kittens in our crawl space. She is the only one left. She hides from everyone who comes over, also. She spent her first 6 years being an outside cat (well, the garage) because our German Shephard would have killed her given the chance. After he was gone, inside she came.

I think she loves every day of her life, too. She watches the sun come up in one window, watches it go down in another (if she’s not outside). I think she “chose” me, because I spend the most time at home. I’m the constant. lol, I can even whistle for her and she’ll come to me (well, if she feels like it).

She has such a great life. Two acres to roam around, protection at night, lots of critters to hunt. I think sometimes she’ll live forever, even though I know she can’t. I will be a mess when it’s her time. No matter what’s going on in life, what goes wrong....she is always there giving love, being cute.

24 years is a long time to love one pet....not something you get over easily.

Came back looking for an update this evening. Keeping sweet lil Whitey in my prayers, hoping diabetes isn’t the problem. It’s a little trickier to deal with but it can be done.

I’m glad they didn’t find anything worse. The two possibilities you’re looking at are treatable and Whitey should be with you for a while yet. :-)

Wow, coincidence. My Kydie always came running at my whistle too. She would hide from strangers but always came out when they were gone acting like she owned the place (because she did).

We always thought she was a meow-less cat, because she never made a peep for about the first 12 yrs or so, then one day she just started singing like a bird with a real cat-vocabulary, and really loud. She used to ball me out and give me a good lecture if she didn’t like the kind of cat food I gave her. She had me so trained that I sometimes had to go to several different stores until I found the right flavor or cat food brand she wanted or else I was gonna really get it. I’m absolutely convinced she actually knew a lot of the words I spoke and knew exactly what I was saying and talking about. She was incredibly smart for a cat.

I know I will never get another cat because I didn’t really want to be owned by this one in the first place but that’s exactly what happened. And to think for almost 25 years.

I’ll never forget Kydie and even though I’m a fairly rugged sort, this kitty won my heart and will always hold a big place there. I hope if I ever really get to heaven that I will have my little owner there waiting for me in the window.

Prayers for you both. Had a white cat wander up to a restaurant I owned 8 years ago. She had been abused and probably dumped in the lot by the adjacent Chinese restaurant.

Anyhow, God brought that little thing into our lives to join the other 2 cats and we discovered she had diabetes, skin & food allergies, and asthma. If diagnosed with diabetes, your cat can be given Insulin injections. It is very easy to do even for those who think they could never do it. Quite frankly, it was easier to give her 2 shots a day than to try a pedicure with her.

After a year of Insulin shots, one day our cat stumbled out of the room looking drunk, gasping, and collapsed on the tile. We thought that was it but quickly put some Hershey’s chocolate syrup from the fridge on our finger and rubbed it all in her mouth. KEEP SOME HANDY. Apparently at some point it is possible that their pancreas will just adjust or reject the Insulin shots. She is still alive today and has been off Insulin for 5 or 6 years. Not bad for an 18-20 year old cat who had to wait 10 years before she hit the jackpot of love.

You already know that plenty of love will help comfort her no matter the diagnosis. As others said, the Fancy Feast can food seems to give them the incentive to eat; and they bitch for more. Have to cut them off like last call sometimes.
If no chocolate syrup, grape jam on hand will suffice if she has a crash in blood sugar. You may encounter this and will have to act as there will not be time to drive to vet.
Be strong amigo and many blessings to you and yours.
