Unfortunately, I believe the same. As the "gimmes" grow in our nation and around the world, I believe there is no turning back. Morality, values, principles, and self-accountability is losing ground everyday.
That said, I'm 62 years young and willing to be cannon fodder if the SHTF, since I'm not a trained grunt in ground combat. I truly think I will see a revolution, whether from politics or racism or class warfare. It's coming and going to be really ugly. There is no nation on this rock that has as many patriotic gun owners and many WILL defend their Constitutional heritage to their dying breath. I would be honored to walk point.
I sincerely hope this will never happen, but it will take a miracle to change the mentality of the "gimmes". I just don't see it happening. Good luck, Sir. Maybe we'll both die before it happens, but then I have children who will have to deal with it.
You said you are 62. Compared to me, you are a youngster. I am a prepper and will have a comfortable personal world if the rest of the world collapses. I don't intend for a collapse to kill me. I am female and anyway, too old for the front lines, but I could medically attend you if you were wounded. Just yell out when wounded and I'll be there.
You and I have lived through the best US years. Now, we are facing the worst, perhaps the downfall of this country. It is terribly sad, but reality is reality.
I'm a mite gray around the muzzle for hopping around in the boonies for any length of time, too. Which is why I have been working on some long distance skills, requiring a less tactical approach to movement.
Similarly, pick a skill or two which might be arcane but important (cobbler, for instance, but any of a dozen half-century 'obsolete' skills) and learn what you can. Practice. Our only real chances of survival come from being able to give something to a community, not just as individuals.
In the long run, people are going to have to band together to get by--and to defend what they rebuild.
