How about just after Gettysburg?

Phenomenal book, I'd highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in history/alternate history.

I'd also recommend Turtledove's "How Few Remain" which is true alternate history ("Guns" combines alt history with SciFi) starting at the point where that copy of Special Order 191 used to wrap cigars isn't lost but then jumping forward a couple decades to an America where the North and South are separate, competing, countries.

And a hint about “How Few Remain”. In a subsequent war, the south’s secret weapon is the Camel.

there is a WWI stage of his books too. In that one, Germany sides with the country in the north and France and Britain side with the southern country, giving us an American front in WWI.

I bought hard copies of all his WWII books, where we are invaded by aliens in the middle of the war, but felt I was being strung along by the second book and threw out the lot.

But Guns of the South is awesome and “How Few Remain is pretty darned good.
