Somewhere Mike Bloomberg is smiling.

I am amused at the number of people who don’t seem to know that the water in the toilet tank and the water coming from the sink come from the same pipes.

I recently spent a week end in a high end hotel in a resort town.
The ice machine on our floor was shut down for some reason (?)
The smell immediately sent me back to drinking my scotch warm.

Have you ever been sorry you’ve opened a thread?
And....read it?

Ice machines are in general never cleaned. Hotels are probably worse than fast food joints, which at least cycle the water through quickly.
The article can be quite misleading because the relevant issue is often not the quantity of bacteria but rather the type, and I strongly suspect toilets are more likely to be harboring pathogens.
Also many other surfaces in the bathroom, which don’t get cleaned, are likely more contaminated than the water in the toilet.

Can’t be too bad!
Years ago when I was changing a transmission and drinking beer a “friend” of mine while I was under the car filled my quart bottle of beer with used “recycled” beer and didn’t say a thing until I drank the whole thing.
It didn’t hurt me one bit!

If you worry about things like this you would probably be better off not eating in a fast food joint in the first place.

I'm not buying this story. Every ice machine I've ever seen in today's restaurants have filters.
Not having a filter makes their specialty drinks taste bad and they put tens of thousands
of dollars into researching those recipes.
Sorry, but I have to call BS. Probably a Food Nazi who agrees with Bloomberg.

Most bacteria don’t like an acidic environment. Diet Coke, with a ph of 3.39, ought to be pretty safe, even with questionable ice.

This 12-year-old is now old enough to vote. The story
dates from 2006.
She got the idea for her project from reading an article about airline ice. I always ask for black coffee.

Ice machines tend to build up mold in any crack or crevice. The mold attracts and holds air borne bacteria. Most of them should be emptied regularly and disinfected. A good inspector will know where to look.

Don’t get me wrong, hygiene is a good thing.
But sometimes I think people overdo it.
When I was a kid, we used to hike and camp and fish and swim all over the place.
Over the years, I must have ingested enough surface water to fill a small swimming pool. Without boiling. No chlorine. No Berkys water filtering.
Once again, don’t get me wrong, contaminated water can kill you.
But very, very rarely.
A good case of Montezuma’s revenge will flush you out squeaky clean! Plus, ramp up your immune system, which for alot of people these days I think is doing the equivalent of sitting on the couch eating Cheetos.
