This happened a few years ago too. A major news outfit (CBS?) was "testing their website" and posted election results a few days before the election. Turns out the "test data" was remarkably accurate. Remarkably.

I do not trust US elections -- at all. I still vote, but I have no faith. I don't think they count 'em.

I’ve been an election official in Northern Virginia and we sure do count them. All the numbers have to match before we can wrap it up for the day. How many came to vote, how many electronic, how many write in, etc., etc. We count and re-count, and certify about five copies with six signatures between Rs and Ds.
