Win 8 is hard to figure out - there is no start button and I spent much time trying to figure out how to shut it down. AND it is difficult to figure out how to get to the “old” desktop with program icons. Since I do not have a touch screen, I see NO REASON to move “UP” to Win 8 and will stick with my Win XP and Win 7 installs on 9 PCs I have between my house and my daughters.

Move the cursor to the bottom-left, click the left mouse button, or press the Windows logo key on the keyboard.

Shut down: Go to the right-most part of the screen. Charm bar appears, go to settings and shut down. Or just press the power button on the computer.

Desktop: Big tile that says “Desktop”. Works exactly like the one you have now.

I dont have a touchscreen device. None of what I describe here is hard to learn. Practice.

When I first used a Mac in 1991 I had to take a tutorial too. There is no such thing as a new UI that does you will get right in the first 10 seconds. If you come in with the right attitude you will get it eaisly.

There were some people in 1995 that still swore by this beauty too!

I think the best quote I’ve seen so far is “not suitable for desktop use”

I have a simple rule, you DON'T put your damn dirty fingers on my computer screen, no exceptions, including myself!
I've only been that way for 35-40 years, so don't expect to change anytime soon.

Linux configuration. Prefer the opacity of Windows Registry?

Actually, if you really have dozens of applications or templates installed or more, the detailed text listing with the automatic alphabetization would be far easier than the sliding puzzle look of Windows 8 tile interface.

Cussing people out seems to work quite well also, plus you get a shocked look to boot :)

ArmorAll leaves behind a residue (that's why they call it "Armor"). I go with Endust for electronics, but the standard Endust of you choice with a non-course, non-linty cloth should be fine for most LCD screens. A VERY mild damp soapy water mix should also work.

According to Zogby and NBC/Wall Street Journal polls 80% of Windows users prefer Windows 8.

I hope the folks at NBC made a full disclosure including the partnership that NBC has with Microsoft.

The simple fact remains that all OS configuration data must be stored in a flat file somewhere. (I can’t imagine it being stored in a relational database, as one always requires a server that has to be loaded, and, GASP! configured as well.) So, since the beginning of time computer operating systems had a capability to modify the configuration data from the command line, whether as a matter of practice, or more lately after GUI applications have been developed in emergency situations, with the command line capability still present. Well, not in Winblows. The Registry is opaque, incomprehensible and unmodifiable by hand. DOS command line? You kiddin’? Yes, I know MS has since invented another shell they had to call, what else, “Power Shell”, presumably because its “power” is nowhere in evidence. All of that to “protect” the user, including the administrator, from the computer. End rant.

I use a solution of vinegar and water. I spray some on one of those microrags and using a circular motion clean the screen.

I’m with you on Vista. I got a Vista based machine as a gift and was terrified because of everything I’d heard, but I can’t say as I’ve had any serious issues at all, and only one or two very minor ones, mostly with older games or doujin games that have many of the same characteristics as older games. All of which either could be ignored overall (BF1942’s taskbar behaviour when loading maps) or worked around (compat mode for some of the unofficial Touhou patches/third party addons, one quirky fanmade unofficial engine for an older game).

*All* the important stuff worked flawlessly. Most of the games worked flawlessly. Nothing actually refused to work at all.

it looks like the computer screen in the hospital from the movie “Idiocracy”

Push a picture of your butt or elbow if that is what hurts... Kids at McD’s could not make change if their life depended on it.

Win 8 is NOT change for the sake of change. Win 8 is Microsoft finally bringing Windows into the tablet age(Win 7 wasn't). You may have noticed that tablet sales have exploded, with little to no participation from Microsoft. Win 8(as well as Surface) is Microsoft's answer to tablets as well laptops, netbooks, and desktops. This is badly needed change.

That is a an important point. I think I prefer Apple's approach, making a touch screen centric iOS to complement, NOT replace MacOS (even as MacOS gradually picks up aspects of iOS).

I DON'T think one interface fits all. My Dremel tool has a different interface than my Porter-Cable cordless drill and my Hitachi table saw. My car stereo has a different interface than my home unit.

It wouldn't have killed Microsoft to include legacy interfaces in Office and W8.

Wow! You're right! Of course, I guess that cliches it as the OS of the future.
