Go read letters in back issues of PC World and Computing and you will see plenty of people moaning about everything from the Start Menu and how it was just some terrible copy of the menu bar on System 7 that didnt even work right, to the then-derided Recycle bin.
I read PC Mag, InfoWorld and PC Week during that time frame. A handful of letters in those magazines regarding the Start Menu ("Why do you press START to SHUT DOWN?") was nothing compared to the other issues people had. Besides, the Windows 95 interface was a movement towards similar interfaces in Mac System 7, X Windows, GEM, OS/2 Presentation Manager, etc. Windows 8 is a movement towards Apple's long forgotten At Ease, best I can tell. The Win8 Metro interface is far more of a departure from existing PC user interfaces than Windows 95 (which DID have a Win 3.1 look option. To this day I use the "classic" Win 200 style GUI with Windows 7.) I'm one of those people who doesn't like to give up processor cycles for cute animations, 3D gloss, or Aero. I also rename the stupid recycle bin to "Trash", because I am a counterrevolutionary conservative.

You heathen! You just want dirty and air and dirty water.
Think of all those electrons that could have been properly recycled. You should be ashamed.
