Gun found in hollowed-out book donated to Illinois library
NBC News ^ | October 27, 2012 | NBC Chicago

VALPARAISO, Ill. -- There's quite a tale that goes with a book donated to the Valparaiso branch of the Porter County Public Library this week, and it's got nothing to do with fiction.

An employee cracking open a copy of Robert Stone's "Outbridge Reach" found the book hollowed out with a historic-looking handgun inside, Valparaiso police said.

The weapon was described by police as a gold, wooden handle, A.S.M. brand, .31-caliber, single shot, black powder gun.

Due to the volume of donations received by the library, officials said there's no way to know from whom the book came.

Police said, however, the gun hadn't been reported stolen.

TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: banglist; book; gun; library
FYI, I am aware that Valparaiso is in Indiana, not IL, even though NBC Chicago's editors are apparently ignorant of that fact.

A book about guns. And if you don’t have a gun....

A mishap on the set of Regis and Kathie Lee would be much more consequential.

Who writes these headlines? It sounds like someone found a gun in a hollowed out book and donated it to the library.

Probably the owner died and this was disposed of as part of the estate.

The police are knee-jerk anti-gun nuts.

This is obviously an old, historically valuable weapon that has probably been in that book since the original owner died and his heirs were unaware of what it was.

It belongs in a display case, not in a police department locker.

My uncle used to have a pair of black powder, muzzle loading dueling pistols in the drawer of his library, along with loading rod, a few patches, and some lead balls. Those things are really cool, not something for the police to confiscate and mistreat.

This gun is a cheap replica. Somebody cut out a book and put a magnetic cabinet clasp on it to make a display piece. It’s actual value is about $50, including the book.

“...a gold, wooden handle, A.S.M. brand, .31-caliber, single shot, black powder gun...”

Which the typical journalist would call a “Glock”.
