Nearby are places with names like Lumberton and Purvis, towns that rest atop a local salt dome where nuclear bombs were test-detonated near the height of the cold war.

I call BS on that line, but what do you expect from the NY Slimes? IFAIK, every underground test on US soil was done on the Nevada test range.

Actually there WAS testing done in the Tatum Salt Dome. I remember feeling the effects of one, while in elementary school, in the early 60s. Our desks slid across the floor several inches. We had no clue what had happened; we only found out later about the explosions.
