dictionaries ad nauseam | 1 November 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

bathetic \buh-THET-ik\, adjective
Displaying or characterized by insincere emotions: the bathetic emotionalism of soap operas.

Example sentences:
The bathetic quality of "instant cliche" endings is to some extent counterbalanced by the kind of ending which combines plot-contortion with climactic enlightenment…
-- Heterocosms, Heterocosms

Attempts to capture the awe and pain of dying can often, alas, come out sounding either bathetic or satiric.
-- Nancy Kress, Characters, Emotion and Viewpoint

Etymology:
Based on the more common word pathetic, bathetic entered English in the 1830s. It comes from the Greek word bathos which meant "depth."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I am considering doing just that. Of course, he’ll glower at me for the next couple of Sundays, but it’s worth it.

I copied that very telling sermon (which made me happy), and shared it with two of my neighbors who also want CINOs to get smacked by a bishop or two...

Two election “observers” were sent packing from two polling places in this county-first after lying to an election official, and second after being told not to go there at all-and told they could be arrested if they tried that again-good riddance!

They reportedly just walked in and said they wanted to see mail ballot rolls, claiming they’d already inspected those in Bexar county (untrue).

Oh-I almost forgot my homework-

As far as the atrocity in Libya
It should help with Obama’s fall
Even a bathetic response from him
Would be better than none at all

No crocodile tears or phony concern
No gratitude or sign of affection
For fellow humans who died as heroes-
He’s busy campaigning for re-election

He didn’t deserve the term he got-
His level of incompetence is reached
A pity he wasn’t caught much sooner-
Like in time to have him impeached

That election official-who is Hispanic-figured that since these unwanted guests had already been told by our AG, Greg Abbot that they had no legal reason to be closer than 100 feet of a polling place, they must have picked an isolated rural county, not realizing that “country” does not mean “stupid”...

LMAO, was just polled by Marist. It was a live human so i didn’t play any demographic games, but i did say i was strongly supporting Mitt Romney, but i had voted for Barack Obama and considered myself a strong democrat, though a moderate. I said i was enthused about voting, strongly supporting him and George Allen, that i thought Romney was better on the economy and on foreign policy. The kid asked if i approved of the job Obams was doing on Hurricane Sandy i said i guess it was ok, that basically i had NO OPINION on that. asked religion, ethnicity marital status and i was truthful about everything except for the part about being a democrat. Oh he also asked about early voting, did i intend to vote early etc. i said in VA you needed a definite reason and it was not based on convenience and that i would be voting on election day. At the end he asked if i would be willing to talk to someone from NBC or the WSJ as a followup, i said YOU BETCHA i would!!
damn, i am going to be sad when the election’s over and no one wants my opinion any more. i will have to have you guys calling me up to ask me what i think about stuff!! LOL!
