Ventura, CA On October 31, 2012 The Los Angeles Times reported a 3 year old Basset Hound died after being set on fire with lighter fluid in Ventura County. The Ventura County Sheriffs Department reported the dog was found on Saturday morning in a ravine engulfed in flames, just outside the Camarillo city limits.
Basset Hound Rescue Southern California learned of this tragedy early Wednesday morning and volunteers spent most of the day trying to piece together if Buddy had been part of the organization. By days end, BHRSC President Melissa Ruthenbeck-Chiaramonte, discovered that the Basset Hound had in fact, been adopted out by BHRSC in August of 2011. Through some searching I found that the family had adopted Buddy from us in August 2011 and confirmed he was the hound who was murdered on Saturday night, Chiaramonte said.
Chiaramonte sent out an e-mail alerting all BHRSC volunteers of this tragedy by saying, This is more horrifying than anything that has ever happened to BHRSC. I cannot put into words my grief, disbelief and disgust at this tragedy. I am outraged that anyone would treat any animal this way. Crime Stoppers has a $1,000 reward in place to find the person who did this. In loving memory of Buddy and in support of the Delgado family the Board of Directors of BHRSC has decided to put forth $1,000 as a reward to anyone who gives information leading to the arrest of this individual. We will also be attempting to raise an additional $1,000 to add to the reward. In this time of unbelievable sadness we can band together and stand up for what we believe in and the memory of sweet, loving Buddy.
Typically, BHRSC, does not have a budget for a reward of this amount. However, BHRSC, feels strongly about the urgent need to find and press charges against the individual responsible for this horrific action. This person has commited a grotesque act against an animal, next time it could be a human life taken. It is our responsibility to do everything in our power to help bring Buddys murderer to justice and ensure this does not happen again to another helpless animal or member of society, Chiaramonte said. BHRSC supporters have contributed more than $1,000 overnight to add to the reward.
Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California rescues, rehabs and rehomes neglected and abandoned basset hounds. BHRSC is 100% volunteer run which enables all donations to be used towards necessary veterinary care, rehabilitation and finding forever homes for basset hounds. In 2011, BHRSC placed 128 Basset Hounds in their forever homes and nearly 1,000 hounds have been placed since its inception in 1998. BHRSC is a 501(c)3 corporation (not-for-profit) and is funded solely through private donations and the generosity of people that love Basset Hounds.
