Notre Dame survives Pittsburgh 29-26 in three overtimes

Notre Dame’s national championship hopes are alive, barely, resuscitated by Everett Golson in a frantic fourth-quarter comeback.

After being benched for the start of the second half, Golson led two touchdown drives — even diving into the end zone for the tying two-point conversion after Kyle Brindza missed the extra point on the first score — and the Irish beat Pittsburgh in three overtimes 29-26 on Golson’s one-yard dive.

Both teams traded field goals in the first overtime, and neither scored in the second. Kevin Harper put the Panthers ahead in the third with a 44-yard field goal before Golson won it.

Trailing 20-6 in the fourth quarter, Golson — after being replaced by Tommy Rees for the last series of the first half and the first two series of the second half — led the Irish on a 64-yard touchdown drive, capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Jones after a questionable pass-interference call on fourth down gave the Irish new life.

Notre Dame’s defense then forced a punt, and Golson marched the Irish down the field in impressive fashion, ripping off three first-down scrambles and converting on three consecutive third downs to set up first-and-goal at the Pitt 10. But Golson was picked off in the end zone by K’waun Williams on a pass intended for Troy Niklas.

But the Notre Dame defense — off its game all day — got a huge three-and-out, keyed by a sack of Tino Sunseri by Stephon Tuitt and Manti Te’o, setting the stage for Golson’s heroics.

"not one but TWO ND end zone turnovers...need I go on?"

Still undefeated... but do you really think you will stay in the top 5 after that game against an unranked team?

Stats say the should have kicked Pitt's ass. Instead, they lucked out. The polls will note that.

Well, let's see...they score only 6 pts over 3 qtrs vs. an unranked team...at home...(Can you say overrated?)

ALL: Remember, ND is the place that rolled out the red carpet for Obama to come speak, speaking VOLUMES about ND's leadership!

With ND inviting Obama, and BYU having invited Harry Reid back in '07, these institutions don't even pretend to be conservative.

Neither does Oregon.....you give up more than 40 points in any game, that should automatically disqualify you from contention, if there are other undefeated teams.

I’m no expert on the BCS, but I know enough to know that the computers don’t give a rip about margin of victory - a win is a win, and as long as they win out, they will be in the title discussion. Through this week they were 1 or 2 in every computer poll. In the major polls, who’s going to pass them - a (probable) two-loss LSU? One-loss Florida and Georgia teams with laughable remaining schedules?

They are still very much in danger of slipping to fourth by virtue of Oregon’s climbing strength of schedule, but a even blowout today wouldn’t have mattered in that regard. All they can do is win, and hope for losses from the other three major undefeateds. As long as they win out in the end, losses by K State and Oregon will put them in the title game in January, and today did nothing to change that.

You are so correct...the BCS is a BIG CROCK of SHIT...and ND should not have been ranked as they were in the first place!

If Notre Dame finishes undefeated there will only be one open slot for the championship game. The powers that be will ensure that Notre Dame plays in the championship game. It’s all about ratings and Notre Dame has more fans and a national fan base that the other teams do not have. Last year’s ratings dump will guarantee a Notre Dame championship game slot. College football, while fun to watch, is really not that legitimate of a sport.

Watched much of the game.

Pitt played a great game. I thought there was a pass inteference call on Pitt that was awful. (4th quarter) It's ashame that calls like that can affect the outcome of the game.

Great game none the less!

I’m proud of our wonderful Notre Dame team. Unhappily, the theology department needs to be fixed yesterday. Also, we need a new President and a new Board of Trustees who are authentically Catholic.

Go IRISH!!!!!!!!

"pass inteference call on Pitt that was awful."

Yes, and there was a clear faceguarding violation on ND that interfered with a Pitt touchdown catch. The refs didn't call that one.

These are college kids. I'd like to see some sort of study done on the effect of obviously bad referee-ing on the morale of the players.

I am with you 100%!

Did I hear the theme from Rudy yesterday while watching the game?

I am afraid there are several Catholic colleges that are not living up to their name as a "Catholic College".

I will never forget Georgetown covering up the images of Christ so Obama could speak there a few years ago. That should have never ever happened!!! How do you explain that on Judgement day?
