No crime had occurred and there was no security breach? He was married for 37 years to the same woman. My guess is his wife would have forgiven him. Obama could have stopped any military proceedings. So how could Petraeus be convinced to quit and go public? Obama was holding the possibility of military proceedings over Petraeus’ head. Or there’s more.

Alternate possibility: they sucked him into a honey trap, were holding it over his head to get him to go along with the official story. Then Petraeus finally said "to Hell with you all" and came clean so they would have no further hold on him.
