Yep.
And now because they caved and nominated Romney a really bad, liberal candidate it’s our fault.
tsk tsk
Oh, well blaming us keeps them off the streets at night.

Goodness, do I have a lot to learn! Wow!

Thank you so much for the help! I’m going to write these things down for when I go to the gun show.

I think I’ll have more questions once I get a one and practice with it. ( That Bersa and DB380 are a nice looking and something I could carry around all day. )

To be honest, I’m a bit nervous about all this. I never, ever thought I’d need to get a gun but the way this country is going, and I hear about homes being broke into more and more, my husband and I decided to do something. Since we don’t live near family, it’s just the two of us so we have to be prepared to protect ourselves for our children’s sake.

MIght I suggest that you start small and simple first (without losing too much protection). My wife loves her Ruger SR22, a smaller .22cal semiauto pistol. Spend lots of time on the range with it (.22 ammo is cheap). Then if you want, you can upgun to a larger caliber. .22 is still deadly and iirc, each bullet hits with the force of wacking someone with a baseball bat. 10 rounds in short order will definitely give a bad guy second thought.

Also beef up home defense with an alarm and other things like suggested here

..I hear about homes being broke into more and more,...

If they decide to get you; they will have thought about it a lot!

They WILL have the element of surprise if they kick in the door and charge in; not quite as much if you answer the door and then barge in.

The thinking/reaction time that YOU have then is VERY short, and you must be prepared on that basis.

Any thing you can do to lengthen that time is money in the bank.

Live in tight proximity to others in an apartment? Then you are attuned to ignoring those close by, by sheer necessity.

Some kind of motion detector near doors or other entry points would give you more time, but also more false alarms.

You live in a single dwelling in a neighborhood?

Then you have a bit more space between your secure area and the public area. Again, anything you can do to alert you that someone is approaching will give you valuable time. Video cameras are so cheap now you could place them in a variety of places, pointing so that normal traffic does not enter the scene, but an intruder would trigger the motion sensing software.

Out in the 'burbs with a long drive to your house?

Driveway sensors can alert a vehicle approaching normally.

Way out in the boonies where NO help is close by rapidly?

All the above with ways to slow them down.

"Smile for the Game Camera, Bambi" might deter some; but sensor triggered strobes on the perimeter should scare away most any crook!

A spray bottle of ammonia at the door can do WONDERS for disrupting a thug’s plans!

That’s a good point. I live in a gated community but these idiot neighbors only pay attention to whether the grass has been cut to their approved height or if I’ve been feeding the deer. We had our car smeared with some kind of glue a few months back and no one saw anything but if I set out some apples (that’s hidden behind a wall) for the deer , within a few minutes I get a call from our neighbor.

I’ll have look into getting some kind of sensor this weekend.

Thanks, I’ll write that one down too!

I think just getting comfortable with a weapon will be a big first step but also beefing up security for our home as well.

I’d recommend you get in touch with your local gun range. They should have an intro course on handguns - pretty good intro. Your local ranges often have rental guns that you can shoot and see how you like and feel before you go out and buy.

Home security is one component of my prepping scheme. Good stuff. Google it to find other good resources on improving home security.

How often does misfiring happen with a semi auto?

For my first gun, I’m looking for something that’s not too heavy and easy to carry around.

What would be a good shtf weapon?

- - - - - -
Misfire can be caused by a lot of things - improper cleaning, not cleaning, bad ammo, but with older people it is most often trigger flinch.

My mother loves her taurus 7 shot.

If you can handle recoil, go with a larger caliber that will have good stopping power. MHG may have some suggestions.

My recommendation is to find a good indoor gun range that rents weapons and test fire several of them. Talk to them about what your needs are and try them out. Guns are like buying boots, when you find the right one you know it.

If you have any concerns regarding your safety in your home, there are a few things you can do immediately to improve your position. The long distance wasp spray shoots a stream of blinding ammonia based spray up to 25 feet. Buy three and place them around the home where you can dive for them in an emergency. They won't permanently blind the perp but it will temporarily incapacity them.

Make sure you have two or three fire extinguishers handy in your home. I have five, but I have two levels and two laundries in this house.

Buy door jam rods to put under the door nobs and down to the floor when you close up to go to bed. And pick a room like a bathroom which has only one door in and put one of the door jams in there for blocking entry as a last retreat room, and if you can, keep a loaded shotgun in that room for the last resort.

A set of door and window sensors is no longer expensive and can give you warning if someone breaks through a window or door. They have them now that have peel and stick backing on them, so they are easy to apply to window and door jams. If you can select a safe room in your house to retreat to, one camera placed near the ceiling which sends an image to the safe room and informs what's going on outside the safe area. Those are now available over the INternet for less than fifty bucks. And last but not least, you can buy an infrared monocular for less than $125. It can give you an edge in a totally dark home where the power is out. There are nice infrared lasers for weapons now, too. On that same note, one of those two million candle power hand held spotlights is disorienting to an intruder who can then be sprayed liberally with wasp spray, or carefully aimed lead pellets.

I am planning on purchasing one of the Bersa all black thunder 380 pistols for an alternate carry, with an extra mag along for the ride.

That is my primary carry atm. I love that gun. I discovered it when I was shopping for a gun for my mother and it was love at first shot.

My first handgun (I was 20) was a Baretta .22 with flip up barrel and it was cheap to practice with.

My next gun (and first CC) was a Ruger P95 (9MM) - inexpensive and got the job done but was heavy to carry (I’m a small person) on my waistband.

A few years ago I got the Bersa .380 and love that little gun, it conceals easy (I never carry in my purse always on my person), but with smaller caliber, you need to make sure you hit your target because while it will kill, it doesn’t have as much stopping power.

Also, even if your state doesn’t require it, take some concealed carry/tactical classes. I learned a lot from the one the Sheriff’s office offered at the community college when I lived in Phoenix.

And like MHG said, practice drawing all the time, even at home I still do practice runs. Diving for my gun, rolling for cover and aiming at the doorway. You can never have too much practice. And practice at the range whenever you can. Ask for help and tips, you will get them.

That’s some great advice! I never thought about the wasp spray! And, getting some fire extinguishers is also another good idea. I think my husband and I have to review some safety issues with our older daughter in case there is ever an emergency while we are out.

Thank you so much MHGinTN! I’ve got a lot to do this weekend!!!

If you can handle recoil,

I've never fired a gun so the thought of that kind of frightens me.... But so does a break in. I think I'll start off small and work my way up : )
