For her, a revolver has less of a chance of misfiring and/or jamming which considering her weakness could be an issue in a semi-auto.

How often does misfiring happen with a semi auto?

For my first gun, I'm looking for something that's not too heavy and easy to carry around.

What would be a good shtf weapon?

Misfire can be caused by a lot of things - improper cleaning, not cleaning, bad ammo, but with older people it is most often trigger flinch.

My mother loves her taurus 7 shot.

If you can handle recoil, go with a larger caliber that will have good stopping power. MHG may have some suggestions.

My recommendation is to find a good indoor gun range that rents weapons and test fire several of them. Talk to them about what your needs are and try them out. Guns are like buying boots, when you find the right one you know it.
