Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 14, 2012-- alexithymia

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

alexithymia {ey-lek-suh-thahy-mee-uh}

hear it pronounced

noun:
1. Inability to describe emotions in a verbal manner.
2. (Psychiatry.) Difficulty in experiencing, expressing, and describing emotional responses.

Etymology: Origin: The term alexithymia was coined by psychotherapist Peter Sifneos in 1973. The word comes from the Ancient Greek words λέξις (lexis, "diction", "word") and θυμός (thumos, "soul, as the seat of emotion, feeling, and thought") modified by an alpha-privative, literally meaning "without words for emotions".

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification.
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

maybe you can do a tutorial on how to do that from an ipad? it’s not immediately obvious to me how to save a document so as to pull it up to post to a thread.

Holler if you need a sub.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind, but I should be okay.

I have already set up the words for the next two weeks and put them into WORD documents, which I mailed to myself. I can open the documents on the iPad, and then copy and paste the relevant sections onto my FreeRepublic post. The copy/paste on the iPad is a pain, since “selecting” a section relies on grabbing a corner of the selection box and moving it to the desired beginning/end of the section. Otherwise, it’s no big deal.

yes, i guess it was the cutting and pasting that is problematic, i will have to practice the corner grabbing and moving to the end, bc i have only mastered the SELECT ALL and that is hard to work with.

You could use the SELECT ALL feature and copy the whole thing to the FreeRepublic Post, and then just backspace to delete the extraneous parts.

It's enough to give me alexithymia, to read the arguments about what works and what doesn't to sway the Mexican vote. Perhaps if Romney had advertised in Mexico, which ozero did, it might have had some influence.

Alexithymia

As we might say to a watch maker with a hammer: Break it down into parts. So here we go with that same fine sense of a buffaloe herd in a garden patch.

Alexi with her sister Disalexi we know as the “Dis Sisters”.

Thy is old fashioned talk for “your’re” or something.

Mia is how Grandma at the Eye-tellyun restaurant says “me”.

There you go, alexithymia, alexi thy mia, Grandma Alexi talking to herself in the mirror after too many glasses of the house wine.

It seems as if alexithymia would be the normal response to the election results. Any conservative who could just go about his daily business on November 7th would be certifiable.

It sounds like a useful tool for watching movies. If editing text is that difficult.

The iPad is okay for a little bit of text editing, but it is a pain if there is a lot involved. We’ve all become so dexterous on the computer with clicking and holding the left mouse button down and dragging it to highlight text. It is obviously going to be a different story without a mouse. A small box gets highlighted, and then you have to drag those little corners
to the desired location. It is great for movies, and the apps keep my grandchildren entertained.

I played with one in a store one time. Went to FR and tried to post something. I could put the focus on a box and type there, but if I made a mistake there was no apparent way to move the cursor so you could type in the middle of the string. A few arrow keys on the pop-up keyboard would have done the trick.

Teacher has some errands to run, and then a lunch engagement. I will grade any new entries when I return.

Those of you hoping that they’d come out with a Pepsi that gave you diarrhea, this is your lucky day!

(If you live in Japan.)
