That said, I have taken it upon myself to retrain decades of habit to learn shooting a rifle right handed. Did it with handguns, should work for long guns too. Multiple benefits for me, like being right eye dominant, might finally be able to use a bolt gun, etc.
Thanks for the DPMS endorsement. Now if my usual gun store here in CT can only get some in stock...
After early training and expertise with iron sights that scope users often refuse to believe, I have started using a scope. And embarassed myself. Now finding there is a bit to it, depending on the scope. Parallax seems my downfall now. Did not realize how small movement behind the scope could move POI. Iron sights do not allow that of course so self-correct.
Hate the idea of $$ for a parallax adjustable scope, but may have to.
25 round mags in .308? Interesting!
Next time the Saiga’s come round (in stock) I’ll likely pick one of those up too.
That is being discussed, but we like our home, surroundings, and Conservative friends (yes, we exist here in CT).

POF makes a piston AR.308 with a billet receiver but they are not cheap... https://pof-usa.com/16.5-p308-black.html
Think of all the trigger time you got getting there. Lol!
Yeah, that’s well over 2X budget.
A Larue, Baer, or GAP-10 would be my preference if I were to spend that much.
Then again, that was 45 years ago. Beau coup practice to maybe ever approach that sort of shooting again. Not that I have the flexibility to get into position either.
Man, that 20" bullseye looked so small first time I saw it from back that far. Good coaching and the discipline to follow it without question do wonders................all with standard issue M14s. Now kids make a big deal out of doing that with a scope and $2000+ rifles and scopes worth just about that much.
I would love to get a set of uppers in .450 Bushmaster or such and another in 6.8 the heavier stuff for hunting, the 6.8 for medium range. I am still tweeking my standard Springfield Armory M1A to fit me, using a GI fiberglass stock I have a lace up cheek pad on it, what I want is one of those new all aluminum stocks.
I think the best addition other than a better stock scope mounts is a bi-pod for the M1A, it is heavy.
The AR platform is much lighter and easier to carry on the run, the M1A is to me more suited in a prone position. I generally keep my .308 reloads under 168gr. so I won’t beat up the op rod, you can change the gas block or just turn it off for heavier rounds. Most people don’t know you can do that and turn the M1A into a single shot.
Short barrel .450 with a can, the best Cree LED light on it and if you have the bucks a thermal scope.
Yeah, the Spingfield M1s are nice, but too heavy for hunting on foot. Thermal scope? Uh, not yet.
I find that the AP4 is my sweetest shooting .308. I did change the buffer and spring and flash suppressor.

Everything we need costs $$$$$$$. I hate that fact also.
