I love the two cats we have. What’s great now is they trust me 100%. The best feeling in the world is to get your cat to trust you like that.

When we lived in town, my dogs would go berserk if we were going to the dog park. Forget trying to make it to our favorite mountain hiking trail. And the old man wouldn’t go on a walk without me. From time to time the kiddos would try to take him without me; he would stop just outside the gate waiting for me to catch up.

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie—
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find—it’s your own affair—
But ... you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone—wherever it goes—for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ‘em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long—
So why in—Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

I got my first dog when I was 50. He is a big old walker coon hound who is afraid of thunder, gun fire and vacuum cleaners. He’s 1/4 little boy and takes up half the bed. He loves to play and usually wants to when I’m relaxing on the computer. He does not like the UPS man or the woman across the street. The unconditional love he has for me is amazing. He will be 3 years old next week, dont know exact date, we always celebrate on Thanksgiving. I am truly thankful I met him and allowed him in my life.

It’s matter of perception. You feed and shelter a dog and it thinks, “Wow, you do all this for me, you must be a god!’’. You do the same for a cat and it thinks, “You do all this for me, I must be a god’’.

I've been there for quite a few #10s. It is the final kindness and a duty one must never shirk.

I missed one because she was in the hospital and getting better and I was told she'd be coming her home the next day. I've never forgiven myself.

Cats are conservatives.

—No man is their master
—If the food dish is empty, they're willing to hunt for themselves.
—They choose their friends carefully, and love them unconditionally.

—which takes me off on a tangent—

My greatest shame— I feel like crying when I think of it— of all the sins I beg God's forgiveness for, the very worst in my own mind is that when I was 12 or so I was suddenly, stupidly, unreasoningly cruel to a cat that had known and loved me since I was eight. I was instantly, and forever after, sorry for it, and things were never the same between me and my Tiger. She died of old age twelve or so years later, when I was overseas.

I'm a 48 year old man, and I still want to cry thinking of it.

Be as good to your animals as you want God to be to you. You are god to them, after all, even if they (as cats, or dogs, or fish) express it differently.

they do look at you when you miss:

“really? missed again? i cant do everything here, you have to hit it first then i ll be glad to go get it”

the thing is the look isnt really critical its just a sad, kind of confuesed look. “how did that happen’?

If the bird doesn’t fall me jumps around and then attempts to chase after it no matter the terrain. LOL

I was going to smack ya, but I see that others have done it already.

Cats and dogs have their own personalities. Some cats seem to be as you describe, but that is from some human like you anthropomorphizing them. Never ascribe human emotions to animals.

We have three cats, and they’re all as sweet and loving as can be because they have known nothing but our love all their lives.

Miss Hissy Slashy was a challenge, but she came around eventually and loves a tummy rub as much as the next cat.

God never made a happier creature than a lab on a duck hunt. its by far the best part of the hunt, watching the dog be so happy, so thrilled. would that we could feel that way as easily and un-selfconsciously.

Dangit; some dust must have fallen in both eyes; they are uncharacteristically moistening.

This is clearly all your fault.
