None | 11/19/2012 | Patrick1

What is a good camera to buy for a reasonable price that will take pictures of people, posing, athletic events etc, that is easily postable to a website or facebook?

There are trade offs. A camera well suited for outdoor sports events may have limited use for indoor use.

How much do you want to spend?

The camera you choose won’t have any effect on posting, most cameras now come with basic editing software so you can resize images.

Couple hundred? Indoor more than outdoor for sure.

Get the Can 60D with the 18-135 lens.
A bit heavy but it does everything you could want.

I'd also suggest the Canon Speedlite 430 EX II flash.

A digital one.

My monitor is completely screwed from pasting my film pictures to Facebook, and nobody seems to be able to see them!

I followed the advice from a previous camera thread and got a Canon PowerShot A2300 HD.

The delay between button-press and picture-snap is irritating as hell.

It takes good pictures unless you’re trying to capture a specific instant.

$115.00 online.

Just make sure it has a viewfinder and not just the LCD screen.

Go on craigslist and buy a used one and save a ton of money. Anything Canon, Nikon or Sony digital should do fine.

I'll do some research on what is currently hot.

Are you likely to be shooting sports events at all?

Cameras with a lot of zoom don't usually have good low light capability.

cnet.com and other (many good) review sites. Relying on anecdotes on an Internet forum is like asking here what is best brand of gasoline.

I have a Panasonic DMC-Z57 that I love, and it cost about $265 two Christmases ago. It has a Leica lens without the high price. After I take the photos I use the cord that came with it to transfer the photos to my PC via the USB cable. Then I can upload to Facebook or another website for sharing with family & friends (I use Dropbox for that).

The camera takes excellent (crisp and clear) photos of all types of scenarios, indoor, at night, sunny, etc. I can use the flash or not. It has GPS capability if I want it. I bought an extra battery so I can change it out when the old one is drained, then recharge that first one for the next use.

I can’t say enough good things about it! Love my camera!

If you’re going to buy used buy from KEH and get a good warranty.

I’m a camera nut, so I’ll bite. My two, non-SLR, compact cameras:

For when I’m walking - Fuji X10: high end point & shoot with pro quality image quality. RAW, jpegs, HD videos.

For when I’m snowboarding, surfing, snorkeling, & watching hurricanes - Olympus TG-1: (mostly)waterproof/crush proof/drop proof, jpegs & videos.
