WASHINGTON (AP) Ah, Thanksgiving. A little turkey, some cranberry mold, maybe apple pie with ice cream, some football on TV. Getting together with the cousins. Catching up beside the fire. Togetherness.
On second thought: Scratch that. What were we thinking? This was an election year.
The Thanksgiving table will be a battleground, says Andrew Marshall, 34, of Quincy, Mass.
Like many extended families across the country, Marshalls includes Democrats and Republicans, conservatives, liberals and independents. And so, like many families that count both red and blue voters in their ranks, theyre expecting fireworks. Things had already gotten so bad on Facebook, the family had to ban political banter.
It was getting brutal, says Marshall.
And now, it will all play out in person. In this family, the older generation is more liberal, the younger more conservative. So Andrew, a conservative, particularly expects friction with his aunt, Anne Brennan, 57. She firmly believes in what she believes in, and well go head to head with it, he says.

No commies under my roof today...
I PLEAD THE FIFTH!
AND
HAPPY THANKSGIVING IN SPITE OF WHAT’S HIS NAME IN THE HATE WHITEY HOUSE.
They are not welcome at my house either!
I love my lib sister, I was once a lib myself. No arguements today, just thanks for my family.
EVERYONE in my family is conservative, to a fault.
I thought it was the ultimate in liberal bias when MSNBC (I think) this week published the retorts to give to “the conservative at Thanksgiving dinner”. The left-wing press was putting out a piece on how reasonable, assumed majority liberals could criticize the most likely statements to be said by the lone, weird conservative at the table.
This gives me a new thing to be thankful for. Everyone at my table this year is as conservative as I am. None of the liberals are traveling to our house this year.
Logical discussions are almost impossible with such uninformed individuals.
Perhaps the final paragraph of Edward Stanley's Robertson's Essay might shed light on the difference between these competing ideas.
The following is excerpted from that Essay, and can be read at the Liberty Fund Library is "A Plea for Liberty: An Argument Against Socialism and Socialistic Legislation," edited by Thomas Mackay (1849 - 1912), Chapter 1, I.46:
"Freedom is the most valuable of all human possessions, next after life itself. It is more valuable, in a manner, than even health. No human agency can secure health; but good laws, justly administered, can and do secure freedom. Freedom, indeed, is almost the only thing that law can secure. Law cannot secure equality, nor can it secure prosperity. In the direction of equality, all that law can do is to secure fair play, which is equality of rights but is not equality of conditions. In the direction of prosperity, all that law can do is to keep the road open. That is the Quintessence of Individualism, and it may fairly challenge comparison with that Quintessence of Socialism we have been discussing. Socialism, disguise it how we may, is the negation of Freedom. That it is so, and that it is also a scheme not capable of producing even material comfort in exchange for the abnegations of Freedom, I think the foregoing considerations amply prove." EDWARD STANLEY ROBERTSON
if I hadn't shot my TV full of holes the last time I watched CBS.
Yep. Many liberals are just future conservatives that haven’t experienced the harsh realities of life yet...: )
That explanation doesn't always apply. I know liberals who have lived hardscrabble lives, but their dedication to liberal beliefs is unshaken. It's downright baffling to me.
I didn’t think I had “those kind” in my house until one wandered through my living room wearing an Amnesty International tshirt this morning. I informed them right then and there they’d better go take it off immediately or else. I’m trying hard not to let it ruin this day but it’s right below the surface.
Very simple. I don’t care who you are. If you vote Democrat, stay away. You are not welcome at my home, ever. Done.
Im just thankful there are no f’n libs in my family.
I wonder why the MSM is pushing this meme this Thanksgiving? It’s everywhere.
some probably went to college..thats were the trouble begins
Maybe that’s why Golden Corral was packed today. Too many couldn’t face their family.
I don’t knowingly allow Democrats in my home. Democrats walk into the polling place on election day and vote for big government to confiscate more tax money... from their neighbors, from their friends, and from complete strangers. That kind of behavior is so rude and boorish that there is no way I could ever respect anybody who votes Democrat, and I certainly wouldn’t trust them in my home.
I am very fortunate that my family is civilized and courteous to others and so there are no issues here.
i just woke up from a tryptophan coma
My extended family is 97% rat.... it ain’t easy. Play beer pong, drink them under table before politics comes up.
