A very insightful article that describes where today's conservatives are going wrong and a plea to fix it.

Honest to God, I am not a liberal or a Democrat.

Eye roll... if you have to say that... you are.

Hahaha, I used to say that too but then I gave it up and realized that yeah, I am a liberal.

Yes, one of the creators of supply-side economics and an author of Reagan’s 1981 tax cut plan isn’t a conservative.

Get a grip. When you start considering Bruce Bartlett a fringe left-wing whackjob you should immediately stop, take a few breaths and try to come to your senses. You guys have moved so far to the Right that you now think a Center Right president is the second coming of Lenin/Marx.

Wow! I was really eating this up till I got the Sarah Palin dis. First off, Sarah was more qualified than loser boy Obama, so the dig on qualifications is silly. Secondly, Sarah’s conservative cred was eminently closer to Reagan’s than McLame’s ever was...so if he’s selling himself as an torch bearer for true conservatism why is he spitting on one of the few conservative star’s we’ve had?

Then the Laffer comment. WTH? I had to quit after that. All the good build up he had established up that point evaporated.

So, Bartlett is now a full-on Keynesian, and is “joined at the hip” with Paul Krugman? This after complaining that Medicare Part D cost too much, and Bush II spent too much? Sorry, this guy is no conservative. He just wants to run with the cool kids and be invited to the cool parties.

I don't care what he did in the past. His own words in the article say he is a Keynesian.

I don't consider that conservative.

A life lived totally within the DC Beltway does tend to warp one’s thinking.

“His decision to put the grossly unqualified Sarah Palin on his ticket was nothing short of irresponsible.”

And here is the meat of the issue. The RinoCracy in DC is desperate to do and to say anything to keep We the People in Flyover Country subject.

Sarah’s primary “disqualification” is that she is one of “us” and not “them”...and that there is no dirt to hang over her and force her to become one of “them”. (FWIW that’s what that NYT thing about all her Alaska emails was about. Finding something they could hang over her to let her into DC.)

Flyover Country needs to teach DC a thing or two about its existence in the service of these United states.

Not anymore, he ain't. He sold his soul to be able to go to the cool parties with the cool kids. Anybody who is "joined at the hip with Paul Krugman", the very devil of reckless government print-and-spend, cannot possibly be any kind of conservative.

"Other dissident conservatives, such as David Frum and Andrew Sullivan, have told me that they are banned from Fox as well. More epistemic closure."

This guy really went off the rails right here.

He is all over the map. Politically unstable and illogical.

Didn't read anymore after he completely and non-nonsensically shifted gears from Bush complaints (many valid ones) to pandering to Hispanics and blacks. Talk about a non-sequitur.

Bush was always what he appeared to be a "compassionate conservative." Get it? No big mystery. Very straight forward. Big government with a born-again, save your neighbor flavor.

I never bought the "Bush as the second coming of Reagan" marketing meme (and it was a marketing meme).

The fact that Bush was a mystery to him tells me this author is not very bright.

Bartlett says he’s “joined at the hip” with Paul Krugman. That statement by itself puts Bartlett in the ranks of the mentally disturbed. He wasn’t kicked out of an assortment of conservive orgs. for no good reason. He’s a nutjob.

He seems a little “all over the map”. Methinks maybe he should get out of Washington for a while and reconnect with what’s really happening out here in the country. A lot of inside baseball there.

But . . . I do agree with him with respect to the need for the Republican Party to reset its relationship with black Americans. Over the sweep of American history, the Republican Party still has many more years as the “friend of the blacks” than the Democrats do, and the Republican “friendship” resulted in actual improvements in the quality of life for blacks (freedom, to begin with), whereas the Democrats have talked a good game, but the result has been a continual deterioration in the quality of life for blacks everywhere and every time they are in charge.

And illegal immigration would in theory be one of the better issues with which Republicans could reconnect with blacks. Talk to the average black person on the street in any of the places where there are significant numbers of illegal aliens, and nine times out of ten, they will tell you how devastating the invasion has been. Blacks have been completely eliminated from entire industries and job categories and neighborhoods.

The idea that the 1930’s and 2008- proved the validity of Keynesian economics seems insane though. Two of the worst economies in our nation’s history, and somehow that points to a successful policy?

And Obama is a leftist. No he does not care about the proverbial “little guy” but leftism has never actually been about that. He demagogues all kinds of alleged victims, blames the rich for the nation’s problems, torments all businesses save those on the list of government-approved concerns, and gives aid and comfort to our enemies. That’s leftism, Mr. Bartlett.

Yes, I read this silly "I, I ,I, me, me, me" screed from beginning to end. The guy Bartlett is a babbling idiot.

Like this?:

"...my recognition that Obama is not a leftist... Viewed in historical context, I see Obama as actually being on the center-right.... It is now widely understood that the nation may be center-left after all, not center-right as conservatives thought."

So, which is it, Bartlett?

Keynesian economics = “For every dollar a person receives in food stamps, $1.79 is put back into the economy.” - Nancy Pelosi

Yeah, I think I see why this guy Bartlett has no friends.
