Story by 89 WLS reporter Bill Cameron

(CHICAGO) - Convicted ex-congressman Mel Reynolds has just announced for re-election with the slogan "Re-elect Reynolds so he can finish the work."

Standing before a sign that said "redemption," convicted felon Mel Reynolds admitted he's made mistakes. But he would not specifically admit what he did time for – sexually abusing a 16 year old campaign worker.

Some say Mel Reynolds has no shame. To those people Mel Reynold's says, "I say to those people that I'm not perfect, and if you're perfect, I'm not appealing to you."

Reynolds conceded this is not going to be an easy race, but he cited the case of indicted and re-elected State Representative Derrick Smith as an example of why he could win.

---

CHICAGO (AP) - Convicted former Congressman Mel Reynolds is running for the job he held before he was replaced by Jesse Jackson Jr.

At a Wednesday news conference, Reynolds announced that he's joining the increasingly crowded field running for the seat Jackson vacated last week, citing his ongoing treatment for bipolar disorder.

Reynolds says he deserves another chance to represent the district and thinks voters will give him serious consideration.

Reynolds resigned from office in 1995 after being convicted of having sexual relations with an underage campaign worker. The Democrat also went to prison after being convicted of fraud for concealing debts to obtain bank loans and diverting money intended for voter registration drives into his election campaign.

Jackson was first elected in a special election to replace Reynolds.

Absolutely...

They voted for J.J. Jr. who didn't even campaign...and is maybe going to jail. There's enough smoke there...to send him. But he will probably get off....He's the right color, and the right political party.

Main thing? He's black. That's all that matters. The content of one's character? Pffft....

He'll get elected in a landslide.

Mel is the right color.

What’s a little sexual abuse of a 16 year old if you are the right color to take JJ Jr.s spot.

Beside that we need more bi=polar Congress critters.

Does anyone remeber the tapes of his phone conversations with the girl?

Creepy to the max.

And remember when he was being led off to jail, he actually blamed "racism" and compared himself to being a slave in the 1800s.

Real POS, and that's saying a lot. Much worse than your typical democratic scumbag.

Yeah...he's a piece of work.

But it wouldn't be unexpected if he ran and won.
