(VATICAN CITY) -- Benedict XVI, the pope known for his hefty volumes of theology, is now trying brevity - spreading the faith through his own Twitter account.

The pontiff will tweet in eight languages starting Dec. 12 using his personal handle @Pontifex, responding live to questions about faith during his weekly general audience, the Vatican said Monday.

Within six hours of the Vatican's announcement, Benedict had already garnered nearly 150,000 followers on the English version of (at)Pontifex alone, with thousands more following him in the eight other language accounts.

All that, and he hadn't even sent a single tweet.

He may never hit 1 billion faithful that the Catholic Church counts around the globe, but he's odds-on to get 1 million followers by the end of the year, British bookmakers Ladbrokes said.

Really. Like he’s got the time or interest.

What he does have is communications staff to make this appear credible.

The church is trying really hard to appear relevant to the young’uns.

The article states all tweets will be approved by the Pope, that’s credible.

Alert me when he gets a Free Republic account.

Or maybe he will follow Jesus and deal with the lepers , prostitutes and tax collectors at Dummycratic Underground. I bet he would be shaking the dust off his sandals in 30 seconds.

Pontifex means pope? So, when Gaius Julius Caesar was named Pontifex Maximus in 64 BC, he was the Greatest Pope?

I thought that the derivation of Pope came from Pape, meaning father.

The Pope has his calling and fulfills his role for The Lord.

Pontifex was chosen because it not only means pope in Latin, but also bridge-builder, suggesting unity.
Maybe he was the Greatest bridge-builder.

I could see where Facebook would have been a problem...He’s the Pope..He’d have to accept ALL friend request. And what would happen if the Pope “Unfriended” you? Could be disastrous.

Actually pater is the Latin for "Pope"

Pontifex is the Latin for Washington Augustus Roebling.

You are correct. Pope is the English corruption of Papa which is probably from the vulgate and not the classical Latin of the emperors.

Pontifex was a title for the priests of the pagan Romans. I think the emperor took for himself the title Pontifex Maximus--chief bridge-builder.

With the triumph of Christianity over paganism, the bishops of Rome lay claim to the title as the chief priest of the City of Rome.

I liken it to the cross that surmounts the obelisk in St. Peter's Square.
