Not sure I see what you’re getting at. To metabolize is to process through the body. To extract energy and new materials, and to remove undesired materials. Everyone’s body metabolizes alcohol. I’m an alcoholic, and I make a conscious choice every day to be sober, because it’s the right thing to do.

There are some people, e.g. many American Indians, who have a very reduced capability to metabolize alcohol. Then there are several Sa'ami tribes in Scandinavia who have many members with NO capability to metabolize alcohol.

That creates a serious social problem ~

I suppose there are other causes of alcoholism ~ perhaps various sorts of liver damage.

The only part of it under the control of the victim is to make sure alcohol consumption is within the ability of the body to metabolize it in a relatively short time.
